I'll start with something very handy
Cozy audiobook player
Its basically the only audiobook player so its not much of a choice. But its nice, has a simple UI, keeps track of what you're doing and you can speed up the reading. shows a completion percent too

quick tip if you are on a debian based distro:
I had to download it as a deb on the MXLinux distro which is a bit annoying, otherwise its only really available as a flatpak (which i dont like)

an unrelated thing, if you have an Audible account and want to have your library as DRM free, you can get OpenAudible, its downloads your library and converts them to DRM free m4b files. OpenAudible is not free, it does cost approx £20 but its well worth it imo.

Semi-related, the Foliate ebook reader program seems nice for what little I've used it. I wish it had an "add multiple files" ability though, as opposed to one at a time.

Lumeinshin the only thing you need is a browser and a terminal to syu. that's what I do on my computer 90% of the time

LMMS has allowed me to free myself from having to use a proprietary DAW when I make music. For the past 6 months all of my music has been made in LMMS

The caveat is that I still use closed source VST plugins. (mostly the free as in free beer but not open source Synth1 which is my just werks VST instrument)

Is LMMS as fully featured as the best DAWs? Not really, but at the same time a tool doesn't make good music. Good producers/COOMposers do. The saying is that the best DAW is always the one you know how to use. I could probably make much better music with FL Studio (what I learned to use), but LMMS is familiar enough that after 6 months I prefer making music using LMMS over using FL Studio in Wine.

I like the database functionality of calibre, but man, the reader and what not have never worked for me right.

It's been a while since I tried using it, but it seems like it wouldn't render, would render wrong, or would do so so slowly as to be unusable.

I think i'd heard of 'thefuck' but didnt remember it, tempted to install it for the amount of times i mistype commands

the other two i hadnt heard of, I still havent given i3 a proper go tbh

Weirdly I did have calibre open when i put more epubs on my ereader and it detected it which surprised me, thank you FOSS. I dont have my calibre set up properly tho, just got stuff i converted on it lol, got a /books/ folder which i drag n drop instead

sometimes tab doesnt work, idk why i dont even think anythings wrong, some things just dont recognise anything until ive typed it properly then ran it

Yeah I tried adding some features to OpenBox (ive used it for 3+ years now) but i could only really get window moving going, just via keybinds not automatic tiling. I probably could get it working properly now if i wrote some custom scripts but I havent tried since.
If i were still in my 'have 20 million laptops all with different linux softwares on' phase i'd definitely give i3 a go again and give it a fair shot

ripgrep: A clone of the classic grep, except it's like super fast! In the last year I had to work on really big codebases and this tool saved my ass so much time. I have no idea how it does it but it's complete magic to me.
I often use this when working on a big codebase, with the classic grep I had to filter folders or I had to wait like 20-30 seconds for the search to print results. With ripgrep I don't even have to do that, just type rg "something" . and it's instant

Photopea: it's not really Linux software, it's a webapp but it's a damn good one. They even have AI art tools integrated, no setup needed. I first found it because I wanted to make a stupid meme for a group chat, I found it so good that I got a lot more ideas and made 5 of them.

oh thats neat, always cool to find a little equivalent of something that is just way better. i'm sure there'll be like 2 scenarios where ripgrep will just set your machine on fire but otherwise its fiiiine 😆

ah i remember Photopea! I think i last heard about it during a beta? it seemed really promising, maybe i'll have to check it out again.
I've had to learn to love GIMP, I used to run photoshop cs2(?) via wine and that was decent once it decided to work
