Gigachad Good games still release in the indie space, but you have to shift through the formulaic metroidvania/roguelike/etc games. Now AAA is pretty much fucked

I gave up on triple A. I am not the targeted market nor do I care for remakes very much. That said i did get the command and conquer remake.

Mobile games are a scourge and should be banned. I understand the appeal but phone gaming fuckin sucks. And as stated, they are now just glorified gambling apps. Been in a modern arcade recently? It jas more in common with a casino than the arcades I grew up in.

What went wrong with gaming?

Nothing. Just find a game you like and stick with it. I'm currently really into Zero-K. It's an RTS with a crazy number of units and very approachable multiplayer.

Another fun game I played a lot is Space Station 13. It's a little hard to get into with it's controls, but very rewarding. There's even furry servers if that's your thing. It's truly one of those games like dwarf fortress where anything can happen, and the Roleplaying elements just take the storytelling to the next level.

Gigachad Agree on the mobile gaming thing. There are so many mobile games and also mmos that rely solely on whales (people who spend thousands of dollars on cosmetics or other microtransactions). I am reminded of the infamous darksydephil wwe champions incident where he literally bankrupted himself spending money on hulk hogan in different costumes. The actual amount was insane, at minimum he spent $45,000 in 18 months on it.

I've seen few people mention the actual cause for the original video game crash, which was not caused by "too much shovelware" or whatever. The economy crashed during that time, and that's what caused the overall crash, because it was in a bubble.

I don't think anything went wrong with the games themselves.
We just buy them differently now. You didn't always know what game you were actually getting based on box art. And often you'd be stuck with that game and even though it was bad you had that game so you played it.
Now you can refund a game you don't like, or watch infinite videos on it, read about it for days before purchasing. There's no reason to try things that are new, you know about so many other things that are like the thing you already like. You'll probably like them. And instead of playing a truly new game that you only bought because of the cover you're playing something that's copying something you already like.
Those new games that are unlike things you've played before exist; you'll like them.

How do you feel about gacha or games that are designed like skinner boxes (to be addicting)? Your points aren't wrong at all and are very valid, I was just wondering. I miss buying games and being stuck with what you got. We weren't as choosy. You couldn't be.

Do you think steams refund was a good idea? I've read some say that the flash sales died because of the refund policy. Can't really confirm that but I do remember it being around that time.

I don't spend money on them, but I've enjoyed a few gacha games before. The Miku rhythm game is fun and the gacha doesn't affect the actual gameplay.
I do not have a problem with Skinner Box design as long as it's fun. Who cares what kind of fun you're having. A wise anime girl once said "fun things are fun" and that holds true every day.

No. I've done it myself many times where I'll buy a game, boot it up, not like one or two things, and refund it. I could have enjoyed that game if I had given it a proper chance. And I mostly do that now. If I had enough interest in buying something I'll properly sit down and play it for 4-5+ hours until I make my judgement on it.
The no questions 2 hour time limit should be removed. But keep refunds for technical reasons.

Gigachad Pokemon Stadium and its sequels look wonderful. SMT 3 and 5 which are the same genre of monster collecting look amazing. Though I find SMT's mythology-based demons far more appealing than Pokemon's simpler designs anyhow. They just need to inject personality

LunaticHigh I relate to this so bad. Shiny hunting is so hollow with the odds, and when Game Freak dared to add some difficulty to it by removing the obvious sparkle in the overworld for SV the new "hunters" couldn't stand having to actually focus on the game to acheive something. And don't get me started on the washed out colours

i know i hated sword and shield because the whole game felt like an extended tutorial

cat_beepo I haven't personally played them but I have a few friends who religiously play them.
From what I can remember the major complaints are the incredibly easy battles, the poor monster designs, the buggy open world, extremely buggy multiplayer, and that it felt like a step back from the Arceus game.

someone could probably give specifics or more better answers though.

Fantasy that stinx. i was hoping to get into competitive though since sword and shield made legendaries legal in the meta. I found that out after I trained an entire team of normal pokemon.

i might still get it because i really want to try a modern competitive meta.
