This is exactly what I think it is. It's not that there are no good games anymore; the indie scene is full of great new games. It's that great new games have all but been relegated to the indie scene exclusively. Not only are big studios not making very interesting games, but there are no more AA studios left to do interesting ideas with a substantive budget.
Well, I say that, but that's not entirely true. There are some smaller studios making games right now, and they've made some of the best games of the past 5 years. Outer Wilds, Disco Elysium, Pathologic 2, all developed by AA studios. But we could certainly use more. And all the listed games, while great, are somewhat niche in their appeal and tend towards the more narrative-heavy. A resurgence of goofy, fun, and unique arcade style games like Katamari or Monkey Ball would also be great. Maybe more AA studios would also lead to more of them, but it feels like a stretch.
