Nickname The mods are in charge, they even have a "Manager" capcode which is said to be RapeApe, we have literally zero confirmation of Hiro touching the site in any way, some things you could argue like the new 3 year pass deal but even when the boards' database got wiped on an accident it was the mods who apologized.
Hiro may be busy but in the almost 10 year he's owned the city he has only had a handful of interactions with it, do you really think that in that amount of time he wouldn't have at least ordered the mods to make boards like /v/ actually talk about video games? He doesn't care. It's as plain as day. In the end he's just the guy who bought the site and gets paid for it.

Those buzzwords have become so overused that it might be for the better. The edgelords dragging down the site will just flock to that "sharty" site anyway.

But I've also noticed that sometimes when I make posts, it says it was "successful" but was never posted, even when I don't use any of those "do I fit in yet?" buzzwords. I don't know what tf is going on with it. I don't post there much, but it's been getting annoying and makes me want to use it less.

Jon the slayer That's the spam filter, if you miss a letter of the captcha it acts as a shadow-ban of sorts where you get a fake "Post Successful" response. Should only affect bots but it's incredibly easy to trigger it, especially since they keep changing the captcha.

so they just implemented an e-mail verification or wait for 15 minutes before posting thing on /vg/, /pol/ and /v/. I wouldn't be surprised if /a/ is next and then making it sitewide by next year. I still see twitter ragebait threads on /v/ that are not being dealt with so I don't think this will deter any dedicated schizoposters from the website. I'm starting to wonder if this is just another scheme to sell 4chan passes

Nickname For what it's worth, it's only new users that have to wait. If they have record of you posting before (ie: from the same IP), you're free to shitpost with just the standard CAPTCHA. The fact you can circumvent it with a pass is rather suspicious, but speaking charitably, it seems like a pretty effective way to throttle ban-evaders like the 'vidya butts' poster. And let's not kid ourselves here, that joke stopped being funny a long time ago.

And yeah this was never going to deter any of the actual problem kids, just 2 days ago I witnessed "he who must not be named" on /a/ get banned and come back not even a minute later to derail a thread, and wasn't banned again.
There's definitely an issue, but Mods think slapping a captcha on it is going to fix when it's being constantly bypassed again and again by schizos who act as if it's not even a roadblock. Figures they would have learned that by now and just started to actually fucking moderate the site for once.

Well, I just saw another ad a few days ago which reminded me I should probably check this site out more and get off 4chan for obvious reasons, its only redeeming quality is the same as any other mainstream site, the large userbase, if you're in a hurry you can get some quick replies, the quality however may leave much to be desired.
The timer is pretty badly done, I've had to do it today for the first time twice in a row despite having cookies, same IP whatever, it won't help with actual spam anyways since any committed spammer can wait and/or exploit the email or pass bypass. Why not just force everyone to wait if thats supposed to be an effective deterrent? I must question if they actually don't keep the emails, they are aware that any Outlook/Yahoo/Gmail can make infinite aliases right, restricting the domains once again would just punish legitimate posters and not spammers who have dozens of legitimate verified accounts that they can make unlimited number of addresses with each.
I also saw threads being moved from /g/ to /b/ for being off topic then the /b/ mods purging them for being off topic...
4chans problem is the same as any other big sites, its way too popular for its own good, there are too many bad actors looking to exploit it combine that with incompetent misguided administration and this is what you get.
To answer the original post, considering there was a time when reddit had gore on the front page and now aside a few more specific smaller subs that haven't left/weren't banned yet most of it is an exact copy of facebook and tiktok tier content, its possible with time, except that even if they can get enough users to stick around there is no way they could ever actually succeed, I can not imagine any big companies buying ads on there or an official client being allowed up on the mobile stores, reddit changed soon enough to survive, 4chan will just go down when it becomes more trouble to run than its worth.

I fear all these new measures will do is prove something we all secretly knew: the worst posts weren't by bots but by users with nothing worthwhile to say.

I don't post super often so a timer doesn't do much to effect me or make me use my email. Never understood the idea behind a 4chan Pass either. I wouldn't say the site is de-anonymized for 90% of users but I'd expect 90% of posters to either opt-in to the email link (something even IRC has featured and is still considered anonymous with) or have their posts slow down. Shame to see but maybe things will be rolled back post election tourism.

Lots of clueless takes. This is exactly why those words are needed, they weed out nonsense. And they weed out people who say it. 4chan never was a discussion board. It's an image board, not a forum. The image speaks for itself, and words can't change it easily. Therefore threads that can be reduced to name-calling deserve to be on 4chan. Only things that can't be reduced then remain. Memes, insults and statements of truth that are impossible to deny if not through memes, insults or statements of truth. Seethe and cope or nigger and faggot is all you can say when you have no clear point to make, as well as expressing your rejection of nonsense. When you think you know what you're talking about, but really don't. It's why Russia and NATO have concurrent shill threads running on /pol/ for years. Least truth emerges through laughing and insulting half-assed takes out in a matter of hours, then spreads across the web.
The very fact it even needs to be explained proves the eternal newfag is always waiting behind the scenes to inflict some emotional regurgitation and demagoguery on 4chan, the rules of which are based off fight club for a reason, and turn it into reddit!
Instead what we need is more places like 4chan as well as forums like this one. They have entirely different purposes and both are better than the alternatives today.

Evernight What nonsense. Imageboards were an evolution of Textboards, they're nothing more than discussion boards which allow images. Moot himself only ever found the concept interesting enough to copy it because he could understand discussions in Futaba without understanding Japanese, because he could see the context from the images posted. With anonymity that also meant it was not your identity that mattered, but your ideas.
It was never about "truth", and neither is it now. Definitely an issue on 4chan, which is why I generally spend my time on imageboards that encourage discussion over mindless boardculture purity nonsense. I'll take the occasional newfag taking someone's bait over interesting threads or replies being shut down immediately for not fitting the status quo.

It says a lot more than a number next to a post can, it's the difference between subtly rolling your eyes and saying "fuck you!" to someones face. Still not anywhere near comparable to actually replying to the post in earnest. The true imageboard equivalent of a downvote is just ignoring the post, in my opinion.
