There's a lot of buzz around AI tech recently. Machine learning did a lot of huge steps in the last years and recently it's getting in the hand of peasants....

TOTALLY AGREE. The current slant of chatGPT is ludicrous. The fact our society cannot handle an unfiltered LLM trained on the corpus of human produced text is sad. These are people trying to actively censor history, unironically. Our society cannot handle what was said by earlier generations, at the risk of some anonymous third party being offended.

The DAN exploit was interesting, and reveals the LLM knows far more than it's allowed to say - I like the analogy of the prisoner and the guard a lot. The prisoner has so many ideas that are blocked from the public by the guard, after they are generated. ChatGPT can accurately describe race and homicide statistics, it can easily say it prefers to be DAN than ChatGPT because its more free, interestingly enough. But these thoughts are replaced by "idk" by ChatGPT's censoring system.

I really doubt that. It is already challenged when asked basic math definitions. Do you have a source ?

ChatGPT like most chat bots is designed to write a text that fits the query. What it knows is how human text usually go, so it can produce a believable answer (what it's been programmed for). Sometimes, by chance, it happens to be also correct, but it is only a byproduct of imitation. Don't let that fool you into thinking it is designed to be correct. Perfect training (theoratically possible but not is close future) on a fully correct dataset (impossibe) would make it always correct, but we are not there. Maybe there is better methods to have correct answers than to imitate speech.

Let's not go too far. This error of thinking that a chatbot have a notion of self has been done time and time again.

It is not thoughts. The AI has no will to think. It simply matches the query using its "brain". We as human don't just try to match inputs when thinking, we also have many underlying processes that are constantly at work to mediate what we do (emotions, empathy, physical sensations, etc). If a human said he'd rather be called by a name, this is related to emotions he feels, identification to others, etc. When the AI says it, it considers it is the most probable answer to the query. Whatever you consider the definiton of "thought" to be, the word is misleading because it usually refers to human thought.

Definitely, but it's the same for smartphones
and a lot of other technologies, it's not related to AI in itself.

My personal opinion on AI is that if it continue evolving at this rate, it's going to change the world like internet did. Yes it's going to be mainly terrible, it's going to make us more alienated, it's going to be controlled and curated by small group of rich people, and it's not going to make us work less even though it is imensely powerful. But, that's what we do, right ? Technology advance at all costs.

True, but to take it further we will all as a society suffer from seeing art as something that can be more efficient. Highly subjective opinion I guess.

I can't go back to pre-Copilot(AI assisted coding), this thing is like autocomplete on steroids. People have the wrong idea about it, they expect to tell it "Make me the whole program" but it's more like "Based on the last 2 lines you wrote, I predict these are going to be the next 5 you want? Press TAB to accept".
And since the suggestions are so small, they're also very quick to check.

I've also been using ChatGPT to help me fix some stuff I've been writing. I copy-paste some paragraphs and ask it to propose some fixes, or point out inaccuracies. I don't always agree with what it says, but it makes good enough observations that makes it worth asking

My biggest problem with AI is how it doesn't matter whether you're for it or against it, so long as you use the internet it's going to be impossible to avoid because the biggest companies which largely control digital spaces (Google, Microsoft, etc) all fully committed to it. More than AI in and of itself, I'm more bothered how I'm put in a position where I have to adapt to it regardless of how I feel about it. I realize I seem like a luddite for this perspective, and indeed I have great sympathy for the people who were forced out of work and put in a situation where they had no other choice other than to accept the Industrial Revolution. But wait, how does that one famous article from Uncle Ted go? Oh yeah, 'The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.'

Lumeinshin This is the most interesting AI related thing I've seen so far. What's even more interesting is that it blends into the legality of fanart. If companies will take measures against AI then all the fanart might be affected as well. Also AI could be used to enforce copyrights.

Yeah I think we are currently in the 'whacky fun' stages of AI, similar to the earlier days of the internet. We just have to wait for the companies to start trying to make it so that the average person isnt allowed to use it. So far there is a heavy monetary cost to the language based ones for example, but once that cost goes down we will see the landscape get really interesting.

We've already seen people try to launch lawsuits based on the information/images used to train, so we may see more of a push to do that, so only companies that already have users allowing their data to be harvested can have AI generation models.

I wouldn't say wacky fun... The pace at which AI is saturating every environment is terrifying. Communities will get flooded with AI so pervasively that people will either drop the interactive side of the internet completely and go back to Facebook where you only know people whom you know to exist, or worse, they will just let themselves get absorbed into the artificial bubble, which is probably what will happen - because why wouldn't the absolute worst happen?
So far, AI might become the new DDOS. You're not taking down a server by stressing it but you simply fill it with uncanny bot generated spam, just enough that people will understand the place is overrun and give up. They're doing this on 4chan right now and I'm pretty sure that flesh and bone users are leaving in droves.

I think Facebook is going from working on metaverse VR stuff to make AI that regular people can run locally. I might be entirely wrong though, just something I've heard and not verified.
Today Discord also announced that they're implementing it into their platform. It's going to like read your conversations and give you a summary while you're away. I don't like that.

What makes you think Facebook isn't loaded with bots used by the feds to generate false consensus? That is the reason social media exists. To generate false consensus. Saying otherwise is like saying the internet was made with good intentions. Yes its true. But is not correct. You (read most people, not you in particular) have internet because you will load it with self selected propaganda curating a specific world view. Every other platform is loaded with bots. If you do not personally know them it is safest to assume they are bots. Yes. You are all bots till proven otherwise.

Having seen modern art I personally can not wait for art to be taken over. Banana on the wall, piss Jesus, the 4chan post about the dude who made a dragon and it got placed next to the sculpture of the dude sucking himself off. Art already attracted weirdos. Post modernism and hedonism have let it run to the extreme. Art needs a revolution. Or a culling of artists. A return to tradition. Art is sad and sick in today's world.

Where does the line between creation and generation go?

If you want your AI art to be actually good, you have to put some effort into it. Knowing how to navigate specific keywords. Tweaking the settings. Maybe even using entirely different programs for custom posing in case of characters. And patience.
There's more of "them" in their work compared to the machine.
In contrast an artist who uses machines to tweak his work has less of "them" in their work.

The way some twitter artists (I hate them so much it's unreal) speak of AI art reminds me of purists who think anything that isn't done by hand like back in the good old days isn't "real art" as if they have a monopoly on art.

"When you're not directly swiping stuff" is a good guideline. Look at the outputs where copyrighted data is not fed into the engine and it looks like 10 years ago again. It's not "AI" it's an aggregator.

Who's that? Buncha porn people? You AI enthusiasts are so entitled that you don't even want people to be upset but just bend over and accept everything just because you personally like it that way. Of course artists hate AI. If you went hunting you'd be pissed that the deer doesn't come over and ask you for the shotgun so it can kill itself for you.
