I love the classic FF (1-6) more than any other era. I like VI the best, but I understand the argument that it is where FF lost its soul. Idk, every game up to that point had something unique about it and I think VI was meant to be a different type of FF game. Problem is they then did that same thing for the next two games. I think FFVI is more similar to VII and VIII than it is to V. If they went to a classic type game after VI people wouldn't complain as much. IX purposefully drew heavily from the older games, because VI-VII were too different.
I have also grown in appreciation for FFIV. Its not as good as V or VI, but its story is still on a grander scale than III. I think IV is the culmination of everything the series was about to that point. The story featured all of the classic tropes, but in a more meaningful way than they had been explored before.
Instead of just starting as the hero of light, Cecil had to become and grow into the Hero of Light. Rather than give you jobs to choose like in III, the story dictated your party to be appropriate to the moment in a way that made overgrinding pointless. Rosa is a top tier waifu and you actually feel rewarded by her relationship with Cecil. The character sacrifices were more meaningful and impactful.
Idk, I like FFIV more and more as time goes on. V has its own charms and better execution on many fronts, but IV is also very good.
