Oh, hell yeah!!! Been a fan since I was 8. I haven't played it in a while though. Love my classic DOOM. DOOM 1 is my favorite game, EVER.
I had an idea for a game, a 2 dimensional DOOM. It has all the bells and whistles of old DOOM, e.g. level exploration, keys and switches, secrets, etc, but all from a top down shooter perspective reminiscent of Berzerk or Robotron 2084. Whether it's a single stick or a twin stick is something I haven't decided yet. Twin stick would be better simply for the fact that that way you can circle strafe but again, IDK.
I don't recall the last WAD I played though... I wanna get back to Epic sometime, I like the ancient Egyptian theme going on.
I have some opinions on classic DOOM... for one thing, while I do love DOOM 2, I think the original and DOOM 64 eat it alive. I give Sandy Petersen his dues, and I respect his experimentation when it comes to DOOM 2, but some of the levels like Downtown were just a slog to play through. Too big. DOOM was always about navigating a maze, and I really like that design, but there's always a level of intuitiveness when it comes to level exploration that's sadly lost in levels like the aforementioned Downtown. Furthermore, the Pain Elemental and Archvile piss me off to no end. I thank God the Archvile didn't appear in DOOM 64.
Another thing I have to probably mention is that I'm a keyboard onlyist. I don't think it's more "pure", mouse play has always been in DOOM, but as a young kid I never knew how to enable it, and on top of this I really only used DOSBox to play. And even if I could, playing DOOM with a craptop trackpad wasn't ideal. So, it's become a habit I bear as an adult. That's just how I've always played it, and I don't feel like changing my playstyle.
There really isn't anything to hate about DOOM to me. You have the absolutely awesome vanilla campaigns, then you have thousands of WADs of all sorts going back 25+ years, there's no end to the fun when it comes to DOOM. I didn't like the reboot. I'm not really a big fan of the whole "LOOK AT ME I'M SO TOUGH I KILL THE DEMONS WITH MY BARE HANDS". DOOM was never a power fantasy to me. You were a sole space marine, sometimes powerless and lost, other times on a roll and slaughtering like it's nobody's business. DOOM was everything. There's a puzzle element with the mazelike level designs, keys, and switches, there's a bit of horror with the dreadful atmosphere of the Mars bases and Hell, and there's action (self explanatory). It's so many things, all at once, and it's perfection. DOOM is DOOM, not only genre-defining, but set the gold standard so early on for all FPS games to come.
