I'm not nearly as enthusiastic about anime (notice I'm the only non-anime pfp here) as many, but there was an online Japanese Film Festival not too long ago where I had the opportunity to watch two movies: Time of Eve (2010) and Patema Inverted (2013).

The former is a scif-fi drama about the interactions between humans and machines, most events happen inside a cafe where you're not allowed to ask anyone whether they're human or an android. The latter is about two kids from different worlds where gravity is opposite to one another, for one it pushes down, for the other it pulls up. I really liked some of the visuals on this one.

I liked and recommend them both specially because they're movies so the time investment is not too much, though I must admit I'm a simple guy with easily met standards.

I have been embracing isekai more and more. It's a stupid but fun genre. I was reading the Overlord LNs last summer, but stopped because I got verybusy... or maybe because I got burned out at the lizard sex part. I also liked the Kumo desu ga, nani ka? manga and anime so I wanted to read that LN, but haven't started.

Call me a normie, but I actually like One Punch Man for what it is.

Haven't watched much anime at all since Yuyushiki (where my name and avi sake comes from) was airing, but I will watch something if I hear that it is fun.

Oddly, I used to like anime that I thought seemed 'deep' when I was younger, but now I just like the stuff that is fun...

I also like Kaiji and _Akagi. _

I also like other SOL stuff

Tanner I have only heard about Time of Eve, but the concept of Patema Inverted sounds very interesting. Thanks for the recommendation.

      yukarihinata LMAO fairly accurate

good taste other than the lizard sex part. I never really watched/read any isekai other than Konosuba, which I didn't really like but I could see why it's loved by so many people. I have also watched Youjo Senki quite some time ago but never ended up finishing it.

Normie stuff can be quite good. I used to watch One Piece and Gintama all the time lol

I love Kaiji. It's a shame that they don't keep translating the newest Datenroku chapters anymore to english, but it's not a big deal to me since I read them in chinese (HAHA SCREW YOU MONOLINGUALS) . those new chapters are less about gambling and more about...adventure? survival? I enjoyed them but they are losing the old Kaiji vibe if that's actually a thing. I never read Akagi tho since I don't understand mahjong. it's on my to-learn list.

gingermilk Just finished reading the latest chapter of a random little manga I saw on fedi called "The Dragon, the Hero, and the Courier". It's fine, basically a comedy about the struggle between mages and the government. Nothing special, but it's fun enough.

As for recommendations, I'd like to recommend two mangas I read somewhat recently. Both them are from the same author, "Matsumoto Jiro", a guy who really likes to write 'dirty' stories. Basically he likes lots of sex, violence, drugs and shitty people.

First one is "Freesia", a story about 'literally me'. He's a paranoid schizophrenic with some sort of pseudo-superpower to blend into his environment, and he uses that power to carry out his duty as the country's best female police officer. This one's great and I think everyone in this thread will at least find it to be "Alright, but not my thing". It's a little long, but it has that kind of mainstream appeal that everyone seems to be drawn to so much. I actually didn't like it as much as I thought I would, but overall I think it was a great read.
Give it a try, you'll like it.
Second one's "Joshikouhei" and holy shit is this one great. Well, it starts off really badly and I dropped it twice within the first 15 chapters, but it progressively gets better as the story progresses and by the end I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it'll end. It made me feel something very few mangas or animes made me feel, a genuine anticipation of what will happen next. Besides that, the visuals are very creative and a certain rape scene made me genuinely laugh because of how fucking ridiculous the dialogue was. This one's not for everyone though, I wouldn't blame you if you dropped it after a few chapters and wrote it off as boring and slow or silly and pretentious. If you stick with it though, you'll get your money's worth.

My most recent was the 15th volume of Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo Dorei Majutstu

It ends up getting really weird, though not in a bad way.

          Time of Eve sounds fantastic.

I have a confession. I unironically love isekai. That's all.

            histoire

Oh yeah, I also watched Cyberpunk Edgerunners, which will leave me a emotional wreck for a week or so

gingermilk I knew nothing about Mahjong when I started reading Akagi and I don't really know anything now, but as I read I would read up on rules enough to understand the mahjong jargon and what plays were good and which were bad, which you kind of get from the exaggerated introspective moments.

histoire I think the idea of taking a person from the "normal" world and planting them in a fantasy world is one of the easiest ways to do fantasy and world building, because the protag is learning about the world as you are. Also exposition can be done more naturally.

Isekai just works as an easy way to build a fanatsy story. Also most Isekai use the language of JRPGs and MMOs to make it easier for the reader to understand what is going on.

Basically Isekai is a vehicle that allows for the writer to focus on writing fantasy rather than having to do the legwork on having a believable world. In isekai the world is not believable and doesn't need to be. Everything works because its like muh vidya and sheeit.

Those are excellent points. Not a new genre either, as much as I've seen some people pretend that to be the case.

I think most of the hate comes from the low quality stuff that pops up, but it's not like that's any different than any other medium or genre. 90% rule and all that.

And that's also not to say that you can't have detailed world building in such a setting, because you absolutely can. I've seen worlds with ideas completely novel or old ideas told in a different twist that really stuck with me.

                histoire yukarihinata
for sure you're both onto it entirely
its far easier to write a story when you can have your protag needing to learn all the things you do as a reader. Hell I remember a manga from when i was like 8-9ish called MAR: Marchen Awakens Romance, probably one of the earliest isekai's that I know of. Kid is in class and a random door opens in front of him, think it asks a question and he goes in, then he falls from the sky and meets the heroine (she was very cute, a bit of a tsun tho)
                was a very good manga/anime

                  Lumeinshin
Here's some more early ones for you

notably the novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), Peter Pan (1904) and The Chronicles of Narnia (1950)

I'd also add Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court

The oldest is apparently Urashimako from the 8th century.

histoire I think its a generational thing. Fantasy type things are normal in a videogame, so the extraordinary can be described in a familiar way.

You would think that it would be a hindrance to creativity to describe things like a video game, but I think it opens the door to making things that wiuld otherwise suspend disbelief seem briliant.

That almost sounds like a slight, but it is exactly why I like Overlord so much apart from the neat characters

                      histoire
hahaha i didnt even think about actual literature
took me a second to realise what you meant
also... these are all, except Narnia, public domain i believe? very exciting

                        yukarihinata
I think the reason for that effect is two fold.

First, it's the fact that it's building upon something already established both fictionally and in the real world. You know what a video game is, you know how they operate. You may not know the specifics of this particular fictional one, but you understand the concept. This is a link they can use to reference a video game that doesn't exist and you know what they are talking about, so you kind of accept it as "just the way the game is"

Second, games are inherently rule based constructs, and so long as the rules are applied consistently, most people will accept it and move on, because that's just what games are.

                        Lumeinshin
Yeah, I was talking about the "real" thing lol. Figured you would appreciate knowing.

Nvkie nice recommendation. I haven't heard any of them but will check out lol

                        19 days later

I’m watching Chainsaw Man and Spy x Family this season.

Both are very good, I really like how light-hearted and family oriented Spy x Family is. It seems like the perfect kind of show a young family would watch together. Pretty funny too, not really that much in your face 2000s anime humor.

Chainsaw Main is alright so far. The pacing feels a tad bit slow, and the actual action isn’t nearly as intense as it could be - overall I find the fighting scenes disappointing. But I’m a huge fan of the general dynamic between the characters, I absolutely love Denji, and he’s me fr lol.

Never really watched “in season” anime before but I find it quite enjoyable to stick with anime each week and then read discussion about it on 4chan!

dog I haven't watched any newer animes, but the two you mentioned are too famous for me to ignore haha. I watched some clips of Spy x Family on youtube, but didn't quite like them. the humor is a bit too intentional and commercialized to me, since I was expecting more of "unpredictable humor". this is not to say that the show is not good, but it is definitely not my type.

there are lots of memes about Chainsaw Man so I recognize some of the characters. maybe I will pick up the manga when I finish what I am currently reading.
