I'm not a fan of rat looks. the rat I like gotta be have some exceptional hardware. Like there's a twin-supercharged rat rod or V12-powered rat rod - now that I have to dig simply because of the engine. But otherwise rat looks are not appealing.
And having a turbo Civic - that is not the kind of a hardware that is anyhow appealing to me either, so I guess the opinion is negative on every front.

While the mustang doesnt fit the clasic image of a hotrod(prewar car with big engine)
    It fits the definition.
Turning trash into driveable unique cars.
The civic itself was a fuckin exocar when tom purchased it so it was already ruined.

as for the mustang, it was abandoned one.
Yeah some people say that the mustang coulve been restored but:

It sat for 20 or so years
    its a coupe
    Its a 6 cyl model

Basically it was unwanted mustang anyway.
Fastback roof was taken of another trashy conversion he purchased

Not everyones taste but imo it is a true hotrod.

While it is definitely admirable to save a car in any form, it is still not up to my taste. And, well, you've said it yourself that it's not for everyone. So I do not like it and that's about it.
The definition of hot-rodding though is not "turning trash into driveable unique cars". The definition of hot-rodding is building dragsters out of old cars. In fact, muscle car can't quite be a hot-rod by definition: it is way too late of a car. Between muscle cars and original hot-rods there are lead sleds, which seem to be a sub-class of hot-rod in the end of the day, but muscle car doesn't belong to any of those two.
Even though a souped up muscle can be referred to as a hot-rod on ocassion - it's not a crime or anything - it's definitely not a hot-rod.
Now, back to the definition of hot-rodding. The original hot-rods were quite simple: people took their factory Ford V8s and Model As, removed fenders, hood and whatever else to make it lighter, and tuned up the engine (or swapped it for a bigger one) along the way. That's the definition of hot-rodding. Turning trash into drivable cars is just restoration and customization, really, and while - once again - it is admirable, the car above has barely anything to do with hot-rods.
If anything, I'd say the Mustang in question is a custom car. Hot-rods and american customs go hand by hand though, and therefore american custom scene is rather prudish. People there really squint their eyes at japanese parts in cars, and any engine that has less cylinders than V8 gets sideway glances. One of the reasons Plymouth Prowler failed in market is because Chrysler made a decision to equip it with a V6.

Using the opportunity, here are some unusual, but classic hot-rods from 1950's. The first two photos is the rather famous Lincoln V12 powered machine, which belonged to Charlie Ryan until his death. Charlie wrote a song about it - named Hot Rod Lincoln, obviously - which went rather big in certain circles.
The later three photos are the Cadillac V16 powered machines. The Dodge survived to our day, which is quite awesome. It is a 1923 original Dodge Brothers' car, pre-dating the factory being bought by either Dillon or Chrysler.
All three cars below is of a proper, most classic shape - and that is what's called hot-rod:

Looks like the honda mustang is more or less done
Personally id have gone more towards GT500 look with the rear and sides.
Also I wonder what kind of power that engine is pushing.
I bet its fast as fuck

I just had an thought id like to share.
I believe that Jesus would drive Fiat Panda 4*4
    Thats it.

Someone actually built a hot-rodded replica of Lincoln Futura. Based on 1977 Lincoln, I believe. Unfortunately, the photo below is the only one I've managed to find online, with little to no tech details. Shame. I always wish crazy projects like this one got more attention, but at the same thing I guess it's cool that people do not build this kind of stuff with show-off and photos in mind. They just do what they like, and it's cool.

so I took my car to my countries version of TUV
      the results are in
      Big issues
Mounting points for rear suspension are rusted too much
      gas tank is mounted incorrectly
exhaust has holes in it and is mounted incorrectly
      some brake lights dont work
front drivers(iirc) frame beam is rusted
      sideskirt is rusted
      small stuff
      interior blower not working
      window washer not working
steering wheel height adjustment is broken
      and some other things.

but driving my car has reminded me why i love it.
the engine just wants to go

      looks great

      Good news.
I too a guy from a bodyshop to see my car.
most of the rust related issues like suspension mounts and sideskirts only have surface level rust from sitting.
for that I just need to find someone to sandblast them, prime those places and then add a protective layer.
since the guy doesnt do sandblasting.
Will need new rear quarterpanels though (picrel)
Now i need to deal with 3rd brake light since i think this was one of the points inspector didint like.
Alfa 155 doesnt have 3rd light from the factory but my aftermarket zender wing has one built in and it doesnt work/isnt connected.
I wonder if i should just cover it to pretend that it doesnt exist

      Sounds like good news indeed.
I need to deal with rust in my car as well these days around. I feel if I'll lose my current car, I'll never be able to buy anything like it anymore.

are you talking about that ford of yours?
        what is wrong with it?
just rust(if so where) or anything else?

          1996FordMondeo
What is not wrong with it.
Myriad electrical problems. Lights, internal lights, rear window heating...
Suspension. Pretty much have to replace it whole.
Something in the engine as well. Check engine doesn't go away.
Rust on the body, as far as I can see. Hopefully nothing critical.
That's what I remember from the top of my head. Wish I had some money to spare.

            Ross_R
            Oh man
it is a shame to hear this
I wish you best of luck with the ford.

bump to try and revive the thread

Ive been dailying a second gen Toyota Camry for about the past year now, after running up about 4000 mi (108K on the odo now) its been a great little car. It painfully simple to work on, the 3S-FE engine seems nearly impossible to kill (no matter how much i drive like a shithead)
great to see other 80s/90s shitbox owners still out in the wild

(not my pic for obvious reasons)

That is a lovely ride my man.
May be a basic car, still, love seeing lads driving old shitboxes.

I personally been at an alfa romeo meet today(without my alfa though)
Sadly they forgot to order the weather so its been raining most of the time(I drove multiple hours to see this meet)
Here are some photos I took.
As I expected it mostly consided of stuff like new giulia and stelvio and some older cars like 159, 147 and 156.
Though as you can see we also got some more interesting cars.

The 155 has a 2,0 16v engine apparently and its in great shape(unlike mine) sadly wasnt able to meet the owner, next to it(right) sits the brerra spider

916 GTV(left with 2,0 turbo busso)(my favourite affordable alfa and the once idve bought if i found one) next to classic spider(based on the rear is series 2

Another mint 155 this time a recently imported v6 model from germany, even got to chat with the owner.

Modified 147 behind a GTV, also next to white spider(right) you can see black 145.

Honestly I didint thought id see any 155s in this meet.
There was also present a 147 GTA(3,2L engine), stanced 166 and modified 156, though i didint take any photos of them.
As for my alfa I got it some brake discs(picrel), kinda fixed my 3rd tailight(aftermarket one in the spoiler) though I need to solder some wires and i cant solder in the garage, and i still need to check the wiring for the horn. After that there is still a shitload of things to fix. I hope ill be able to take my alfa to next meet.

Welp im back to make an update on this thread and probably disapear for a month or so again.
Replaced the brake discs on my Alfa. Started the car to push out brake pistons and the car started leaking fuel. Turns out some hose clamp got loose for some God forsaken reason. Tightened it and doesnt leak now.
Today I fed a wire from interior to the engine bay so I could make horn work again. I know im doing a hack job but man im not in mood to loose my mind with the Italian wiring.

So I also finally know why my engine runs so rick. The flexible exhaust flange is toast and the lambda sensor is after it.
Most of the exhaust seems to be held on by zipties.

And I know why the TUV didint like my fuel tank mounting

Iam considering just getting a wirebrush and tackling underside rust since cant really find anyone to take it care for me(not that ive been putting much effort into it).
              On the other note.
I bought a new car to daily.
An 08 BMW E91 318d(pic is stock photo)

Its a good car. Did have to change the chain immediately since N47 is known for the chain issue.

              12 days later

              I'll just post several videos.

People probably just don't realise how much art went into an ordinary custom car back in the days. Take a look at something like Darryl Starbird's Predicta.
              It went from this:

              To this:

And just imagine how much of that work has been done with the hands of man. Back in the days people just took instruments and worked on the body. Darn, I have magazines from the 50's with tutorials about that stuff. Do you know how to make a hood scoop? With a hammer, a chisel and your own two hands. That's how it's been done.
Now it's decals and stickers instead of pinstriping and plastic moulding instead of steelwork.
Cars were art, and it is a shame that they became a thing that you just use like a screwdriver or something...

                2 months later

Man Im doing decent ish progress with my alfa
from the entire TUV list only 3 things are left

                Light alignment
                Exhaust flange is dead
                Rust
Now rust is the biggest problem. I tried working on it and man it sucks.
I think ill save up some money and hire someone to tackle the bodywork.

                2 months later

                another belated bump
i return with yet more ancient toyotas, this time its my new winter project. a first gen (RA29) '77 Celica.

ive wanted one of these ever since i was in gradeschool, so this is one of my grail cars. lovingly named "Fubuki"
                yes, named after IJN Fubuki

nigh indestructable 20R making all of maybe 90HP mated to a five speed standard transmission sending power to the rear wheels
so far all ive done is new spark plugs with NGK wires, fixed a small exhaust leak, and the usual replacement of old bunt bulbs and ancient fluids. My long term plans involve ripping out the stock carb and replacing with a weber 32/36, new intake and exhaust manifolds and perchance some KYB struts

a view of the absolute vacuum line eldrich horror that is the stock carb. ill try to get some video of highway pulls and other related shenanigans when i get the chance
