Ive been slowly working through a queue of games as of late. Ive been on the grind of getting a wider pallet with a host of games that were genre-defining to having a cult following. The list is long, but Ill just talk about the few that I have been playing through now.
Final Fantasy VI
Interestingly enough, I have never played an FF game up until now. Most of my JRPG experience was from a couple fire emblem GBA games that I emulated as a kid and Pokemon (if you can even call that a JRPG). After seeing the intro sequence, I was pretty much hooked on it. I'm currently emulating the US release with a fan patch on it that improves translations, bugs, and some other localization nitpicks.
Overall I really find the setting's fusion of the traditional fantasy with the industrial revolution/steampunk really interesting. The contrast of a lot of the groups in the story and the progression of technology between both characterize their motives really well. I am aware that I haven't gotten to the really good part of the story yet, but so far I've been really enjoying this game.
Chrono Trigger
I've been on a roll with JRPG's as of late, thing being another one I've been playing (longer than ffvi, but still only halfway through sadly). I am not playing the original SNES release, rather I've been going through the DS release on my homebrewed 3DS. I've hear a lot about how good this game is and I thus picked it up. All the praise behind it is true plus more. The setting and how it intertwines with the writing is quite unique. I haven't really seen a game that handles time travel as well as Chrono Trigger, both in regards to the causality aspect of it, as well as keeping everything interesting. The combat system is especially unique with its fusion of real-time and turn based systems (IA lot of this seems to be gleaned from FFVI, but improved on and actually made real-time, compared to being pseudo-realtime like FFVI)
There is one other game that I am playing, but Its not really an old game. Plus, I would rather do it justice by making a dedicated post to it since it is such a good game in my opinion.
