Anyone here play warhammer or 40k? I don't play but I paint the models. I have the necron combat patrol box and an extra box of warriors. I'll get some pictures up eventually.

I play, Gigachad. I started playing in middle school with 3rd Edition, and right now I play 4th edition with my friends. I’m trying to get them into Battlefleet Gothic and Epic: Armageddon as well so we can play a big range of battles. I play Imperial Guard, and I’m working on smaller Chaos and Space Marine armies now.

got in to AoS for a bit last year but I am so picky about models being painted correctly I didn't make time for it and stopped. That said the new models for AoS are outstanding. I used to have WF army of about 3,000 points ages ago...

Here are some of my guardsmen. The officer is a Fullborer miniatures artillery office and my normal guardsmen are Warzone plastic Imperials. Warzone was a 90s competitor to 40k.

The tomb blades are done outside of a few touch ups on 1. The necron warriors are done but I couldn't get a good shot with any detail with all of them. I havnt started on the deathmarks/immortals. My brother borrowed my super glue and dried it out and I'm lazy. The night scythe is the current project. I out magnets on the guns so I could switch it out

Does anyone else feel like the rules in 9th ed change too often? It seems like every time I play there’s something new to keep track of.

I hate that about the newer editions. I play 4th edition with my friends so I can avoid that fucking nonsense. It's just too transparently competitive-focused and consumerist: change for the sake of selling more books with just endless rebalancing of the changes to achieve some impossible level of parity. The game's best point is the models and background. If you're playing Warhammer out of some need to compete you're an alien lifeform to me.

As for books, I read a bunch back in high school but not many were memorable. I liked Ciaphas Caine (he's just Flashman in 40k, but there's nothing wrong with that), the Imperial Guard novel 15 Hours, and in 2020 I read the Eisenhorn trilogy which was quite good.

Have you guys read any of the books? I've done all the ciaphus cain, nercrons, that one genestealer cult audiobook and just finished the first gaunts ghosts today. Commander farsight is next. Any recommendations? How are the mechanicus books?

Back during the lockdowns I was super bored and decided to randomly pick one my brother's 40K novels and I was hooked. So I think I'm in a good position to recommend books because they we're my first (and tbh so far the only, if you don't count binge reading the wikis) experience with WH40K. I'll go ahead and list the ones that pop into my head in no particular order and explain why I liked them.

15 Hours: The first 40K novel I read and it was the one that got me hooked, so of course I have to recommend it. It's pretty gritty and oppressive and has MAJOR Battle of Stalingrad vibes. The title is a reference to the life expectancy of the soldiers in the planet. I can't recommend it enough.
Word Bearers Trilogy: Hands down my favorite Chaos books. The Word Bearers are unique in that they've remained whole as a Legion after falling to Chaos by enforcing a strict discipline code and generally being Lawful Evil. While they're all fanatically loyal to the Legion as a whole, they have a major backstabbing syndrome among themselves which leads to all sorts of interesting interpersonal conflicts. Plus you get to see a possessed Chaos Space Marine getting chewed out and discipline for getting himself drunk on duty which by itself makes it a good read already.
Dark Heresy books (Scourge the Heretic and Innocence Proves Nothing): It was by the same author as Ciaphas Cain (which I haven't read yet, incidentally) and both books were incredibly fun, but I kinda can't actually recommend them because they were supposed to be a trilogy that got cancelled after the 2nd book. Only read it if you don't mind getting invested in a story that's gone be left in a cliffhanger forever.
Pawns of Chaos: This is a pretty unique novel because it is told from the point of view of a civilization of tribals that worship Tzeentch and are fighting a guerrilla war against a city-state built by the descendants of a Imperial ship that crashed and got stranded on the planet generations ago. It's interesting in that if it weren't for the use of some familiar names and terms, you'd even forget you're reading a WH40K novel in the first place for at least half of the book.
Double Eagle: Apparently it is somewhat controversial by lore purists for stuff like Khornate sorcerers, but I just read this for what it is and I really liked it. It focus on pilots fighting air battles around a besieged city, and it really reminded me of my grandpa's old paperback WWII novels I used to read. If 15 Hours had Stalingrad vibes, this one has Battle of Britain written all over.
Death World: There's isn't anything much I can say about this one other than it is fun. It reads like one of those 80's jungle war action movies.
Eye of Terror: It is a story of a scoundrel rogue trader and a navigator going through the Eye of Terror. It's a really neat insight into how daily ordinary life in a demon world works (there's a pretty funny scene of two demons competing in an election for mayor of a village trying to assure the voters that each will torture the voters the least if they're elected).
Relentless: An Imperial Navy captain gets betrayed and deposed and has to fake his death and get press-ganged into his own ship to take it back. It shows just how Navy spaceships are run from the internal politics to the slave labor that runs the bowels of the ships.

I think it's hard to go wrong with Necrons if you stick to the general idea of metal bodies and glowing Gauss weaponry. I think it only becomes risky when you try to paint their bodies like they are composites/ceramics, because that's just harder to do well.

Patience and practice are all it takes--provided you don't have some essential tremor, epilepsy, so some other muscle or nerve disorder. And everyone's first models look bad. I have some of the first Plague Marines I ever painted, back in the early 2000s, still in their original awful form so I can see how far I've progressed. Don't be afraid to start out and be bad!

Let's see some of those Slaanesh minis. That sucks not having anyone to play. I lucked out in that I have high school friends to play with. I cannot stand 99% of the people you encounter in gaming stores.

Also, I finished up some converted Battlefleet Gothic Oak ships: two Kill Kroozers and one Terror Ship. I used Droplet Commander Resitance ships to make these. There is some minor conversion work to "orkify" these, and then I also relied on the rusty paint job to emphasize make them read as Ork.

I play Slaanesh. I love the game, but live in a rural area and don't have any fun people to play with. All the people who play around here are extremely obnoxious people.

I've played many WH40K video games. Also GM'd a Dark Heresy tabletop, thought it was not a WH40K, but my own world, which is only lightly based on WH40K (and then I've just thrown in everything else into it - Star Wars, Battletech, Mutant Chronicles, Alien... everything). Players liked it - now those guys actually into original WH40K, paint minis and all that - but, eh, since these are real-life sessions and we are all grown-ups, we really only play during the vacation time and then it is almost a year-long break, since everyone has a job. Well, everyone but me - I do not have a regular one.
As for books, I've started with Horus Heresy, and I've pretty much dropped it after the fifth book. I've tried several books after the fifth one, but didn't finish none. The quality went down really rapidly in my opinion. Horus Heresy Novellas are good though, it seems like GW made their authors to do good for limited editions. Either way, after Horus Heresy I've gravitated towards the older, pre-BL books, and I think those are vastly better. My favorites are all in the 1990 Deathwing anthology. And as for the new ones - the last good one I've read was Dan Abnett's Titanicus, which was... 2012, I guess? I really want to read first three or so books about Ciaphas Cain at some point.

Every day I think about how 40K has three canons... one for the video games, one for the tabletop, and one for the RPGs...and then maybe another for the books...I am FUMING!

The lore is all messed up. I have no idea what is reality or not.

I've finished the first Horus Heresy book Horus Rising and enjoyed it, but i'll probably just stick to that series for now. So I wont consider myself a fan yet. Most definitely an interesting world! weird how i'd missed out on it all this time.
