I've added two more records to my vinyl collection, as of now I have at least 30, those two albums being the bends and kid A, just need httt and moon shaped pool to finish my radiohead collection. Am thinking of starting a prog collection with king crimson or PF being my next main band. I also have an interest in buying certain CDs, any recs? I don't care what genre, just no country or reggaeton. I would appreciate mainly rock or rap albums.

Something by Car Seat Headrest maybe ? I was obsessed by Radiohead for years until I discovered CSH.

Basile I've been thinking of checking them out, I keep finding new radiohead songs, and with that I continue to add to my playlist.

I dont buy vinyls, My dad pre-ordered the pink floyd rerelease of dark side of the moon which comes with one so we'll probably buy a player this year, soooo maybe i'll get a few.

I buy Cassette tapes tho on occasion. I would suggest the Talking Heads album 'Naked', not prog rog or anything but its a fun listen. I do like some country though

Lumeinshin Anything by the talking heads is a must, I never got into country which is funny since I live in Texas, personally it's not for me, at least not new country.....but maybe I could get into it.

Lumeinshin As promised, my family bought my dad a vinyl player for his birthday and I have just ordered him some vinyls he'll like (hopefully). Stuff like Biffy Clyro, Keane and such.
It helps that I don't dislike them either 😆 Biffy Clyro are definitely one of those bands where I think everyone knows a few songs, but not many people know who they are

I also got myself some cassettes by the same artists!

There has been an influx of Chinese knockoffs on eBay and aliexpress of albums, and albums that were never on cassette have been put on and sold there. I have bought a few so I'll see if they at least did a good job

Ross_R I dont have a proper deck, i did buy one that was supposedly refurbed a couple of years back, but it immediately ate a tape and broke. I do have a pretty fancy Walkman tho. A WM-GX622, its pretty good but I also like to use a less complex playback only Walkman for listening, although it doesn't sound as good as the nice one. The gx622 records okay, but is a little flat. I was not sure whether it was recording in mono or not but it does sound good enough for now. It uses one of those vape batteries which I need to get a few more of.

Jay I know the feeling. Radiohead is so good, even their B sides and unreleased material is genius. Here's some lesser known stuff you should check out:

Covers of Ceremony and The Headmasters ritual by them
Yorke's Ingenue piano cover on Ross show
True love waits live in Luna Theatre (for the organ or whatever that they never played again)
Paranoid Android early version that lasts for about 7mn40 (they never played the end piece with organ again)
How to disappear completely live at canal plus 2001 (Thom said that if he was remembered for one song he would want it to be HTDC)
Lift live at pinkpop 1996 (way better than album version, reminds me of Yellow by Coldplay for some reason lol)
Fake Plastic Trees live Glastonbury 2003 (for johnny 's solo)
Bangers and mash live from the basement (the one in which Thom talks about flying goggles in the begginning, more johnny craziness) (also all in rainbows from the basement)
Also Atoms For Peace and Thom Yorke solo albums if you don't know them already

Writing that list took me for a ride. I used to be such a nerd. There's probably more I forgot though.

Now for CSH I could write an even longer list, I suggest you begin with twin fantasy (face to face) and see if you like it.

Basile Nice, I've also been listening to the smile, since it's just another thom thing, and so far it's what I expect. I'll be sure to check some of the stuff on that list, actually i've seen most of the stuff there, also in the bangers and mash bit, thom talks about getting it right, since I assume they rarely play that live ever.

I have a large collection of CDs and Vinyl. I do not know what is around you, but if you go to your local record store always browse the bargain bin. You would be surprised by what you might find. Keep an open mind and if it looks interesting, listen to it.

If you like progressive, I'd suggest looking into jazz fusion. Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Weather Report are a few bands that seem like they'd fit in your collection. I trust that you can find out which albums people recommend (I believe all three have self titled albums as their first album, those are as good of a place to start as any.)

Can't go wrong with other prog artists. I used to be a huge Procol Harum fan. I definitely recommend checking out A Salty Dog as it is a nice piece of orchestral rock.

If you like rap I'd say try to pick up a few MF DOOM albums. I have yet to find hip hop than I like better than MF DOOM's early albums.

If you do go bargain bin hunting my advice to you is: if it looks good, buy it! You might find an unexpected new favorite. I once bought Blur's Park Life because I knew about the Gorillaz and the cover interested me. I actually really ended up liking the album.

Out of my collection I must recommend these 4, though I won't begrudge you if you can't find a copy of a late soviet rock band in the states. If I'm being honest I think its the only one in Texas, though you should at least give their song Spokoynaya Noch or Calm Night a listen. But if its prog you're after specifically, Yes's Fragile is my favorite (yeah I know its a boring pick but Heart of the Sunrise is so good bro), I'm still mad at myself for giving my vinyl copy of that album to my dad

Redrick Fragile is amazing, as is most of the Yes discography, I might have to give those a listen to, personally i've been listening to the who's early stuff and getting into opeth as of lately.

As for me, I only really buy physical when I can't find digital, so I can make it digital and upload wherever I can.
And, frankly, I hate vinyls. They should've died in favor of tapes much earlier.

Jay To be honest I don't really like The Smile. It sounds bland to me, like it's only the tasteless jazz chords that Radiohead used sometimes, but without the catchy and original sounds and riffs that made the songs memorable. Atoms for Peace is in my opinion much better. As for Thom's discography, The Eraser is above the rest I think.

In the banger and mash video some years ago I would not understand one word of what he says. Now that my English has reached C1 I understand what makes sense but still not the strange words/jokes. What is funny about this version is that he looses grip of his sticks mid song, but another set is ready suggesting this happens often.

Basile That's a fair opinion. I personally like the smile but yeah I agree their stuff isn't as good as thom's solo stuff, that includes spectre and the eraser, I hope they make a stronger second album, but who can really say since atoms for peace did amok and then peaced out(no pun intended)

Jay yeah, I hope so too. It's more likely that the smile make a second album because it is a legitimate band I believe, while AFP was more like a live band that Thom assembled to play his songs, using the best musicians he could get.

This may not be the right thread to ask, but here I go.

Do you know of any particular resources to find lyrics for obscure/niche music? There's this one Japanese song (sung in Engrish) I've listened to for many years, but I found that there's actually nowhere with the lyrics anymore. I can't even find the song on Youtube, had to go to bilibili for it. And Google's algorithm seems to have gotten drastically worse over the years, so I'm having trouble on that front too.

The best way would be to download Tandem app on Android, choose the language you want and find somebody willing to write down the lyrics for you.

I could technically do that myself, but the reason I would like to find the official lyrics is because the lyrics aren't in proper grammatical English (or even pronounced correctly sometimes) but I'd like to know what the singer intended in their own words. I have a vague approximation of it, but it'd be nice to have confirmation.
And more broadly, I'm curious to know where I can find such resources for other niche/obscure music. There's bound to be something out there like that.

Well, none that I know of. Be sure to reply to this post if you'll ever find something, but in my experience obscure and niche music doesn't have much resources to go to, hence why it is obscure.
