Anyone else tired of the (modern) internet?

I've been thinking about this again due to recent events, I have quite a few times in the past few years but especially these past few months, not even sure where to start, is it me or does the internet just suck really bad now, like not even that slowly approaching near uselessness levels bad?
Like Twitch is deleting all the videos today, so im going through my subscriptions to save stuff, lots of good memories guess too bad within the tiny timeframe theyve given its unrealistic to save even just a portion of what has survived this far before they pull the plug for good. It just starts to further piss me off when the garbage on the front page starts to autoplay, everyone is a paid shill begging for donations and followers, extremists moralizing like its TV, whatever happened to when it was just the modern equivalent of standing behind a friend playing and viceversa? Don't even get me started on YouTube, 100x worse there, its been impossible to find anything worthwhile there for years except by direct link elsewhere, so the decent videos that do technically exist might as well not if its impossible to find them, Ive drastically cut back the time I spend there in the past few years. Twitter I quit years ago, I used to think I had an addiction with like 4K tweets after years, nowdays people have 100K tweets within months if not less, most of the small forums and sites I've used to frequent have been dead for years, everyone just lives on social media now don't they?
Last time I changed email, while going through every service changing it I was thinking to myself constantly "Do I even need any of this, why don't I just delete all this shit, what a waste of time". Again a few days ago I'm exporting of what remains of Skype, obviously Skype has been ruined for a long time but still, its at least not Discord, there is nothing worse than Discord, both technically and community wise. Why does nothing like Skyperious exist today? Its so useful and way better than the official MS export tool but I guess its just one of those things that can't exist anymore and theres no demand for it, why would you want to have convenient offline access anyways, just lose everything when Discord bans you because they can't spy on you enough or decide you've performed wrongthink. I tried Matrix before, clunky af, horrible UI on every client, cheap Discord ripoffs all of them without exception, all the public groups suck (I mean thats to be expected I guess). Yesterday I try out SimpleX, really cool idea, no identifiers, easy separate identity management for every contact/group, Linux client barely functional, no wonder the desktop links are hidden on their site, UI is even worse than any Matrix clients, why must everything be mobile centric crap now? Groups suck as expected. I'm wondering is it really Skype that I miss or the people, I guess it makes sense to shut it down when theres no one to use it anymore, maybe its me, I don't think I've changed much but everyone else seems to have, do cool people just no exist anymore? Few thats left probably gave up too. Look on any of the big sites (YT/Discord/Twitter/etc) or the supposed alternatives (Rumble/Matrix/Bluesky/etc) I can't tell them apart, its all the same, always some current thing drama garbage, tone policing and enforced opinions, everyone always trying to show much morally superior they are, meanwhile I'm still stuck in like 2010 apparently, I'm just a boring guy who wants to play games and mess with computers in peace, is the internet just not for me anymore?

Im thinking do I even care at this point when YouTube is gonna shut down? Should I be mad about the games they took away when Origin shut down? Nobody on my friend list has been online in years, they may as well be dead, thats basically the message, even when a modern game doesn't suck if its multiplayer (applies to single player games too there I'm just not forced to deal with it) it'll probably have a completely insufferable community so not worth bothering.
When every site is forced to require ID and whatever, do I care anymore? The internet is basically already dead 99.9999% of the way.
"Internet native content" is dead, the social aspect is dead, the only thing that still seems to work reasonably is for raw information. Database sites are up, some things can still be downloaded/ordered, thats all the internet is good for now, hoarding pre-internet stuff, and I guess thats fine, just sucks all the new things it was supposed to enable are basically over. Some say in the far future that may change again, they may be right but I wouldn't count on it, even if it did by that time I'll actually be too old so who cares at that point anyways, until then I've got a huge backlog of games and anime, I started buying CDs and properly listening to music again, I might start to learn to code, there is stuff to do but the early death of the internet is still sad regardless, I'll miss it.

Idk. In these times, I just use the internet like a tool. I use it pretty strictly for talking with people, search, and streaming. It's a means to an end, not a new world like I had originally imagined as a kid. No more frontiers exist

Yep. You are getting it, I think, but let me streamline your post a bit.
Everything that you've told about YouTube videos is appliable to websites in general. Have you ever thought that Internet is supposed to have hundreds, thousands of websites from all over the world?
Now, ask yourself: how much websites do you actually visit regularly? It's a good result if you can count a dozen of them. Bonus points if they are actually websites, not subdomains of some massive platform like Neocities or Blogger.
Internet is monopolized, really. Several big tech giants managed to drive people to their sites like they are cattle or something. That's quite depressing if you really think about it.

Appealing to lowest common denominator and following the general design outlines is basically the only hope for those small-time solutions to cut their own slice of userbase.
Alternative is to forget the userbase at all. Networks like XMPP or Direct Connect still exist, and, well, I'm there. Other people are there too, even if not much. All for a reason.

Much like Aerp said, free speech cannot exist when there's money to be made. But the worst part? The end user is happy with that.
I saw people giving away their freedoms for the minimal comfort. Downloading mp3? But then you will have to sort them, upload them on your phone manuallly... Who wants that when you can simply pay for Spotify subscription?
So what if their playlist will be curated by algorithm? Most of people do not even see the horror of it: when you are not the one who uses the algo, but the one that is being used by it. They don't care. They are fine and dandy in their golden cage. And me - I'm going mad, because I somehow lack the ability to trade my freedoms for comforts and steadily become a social outcast.
Since I live in Russia, probably the biggest shock for me was the fact that when Steam, Spotify and others banned my country, people still didn't move away from those serivices. They learned to circumvent the block.
Just get that: they spent extra effort to work around the block to keep giving Steam their money. The most popular reason is simple: Steam is comfortable library with all your games in one place. Me with a dozen of HDDs? I'm a freak.
And the soultion to it? Well, there's no solution. All you can do is learn to exist in this madness.

Search for more niche forums like SheepishPatio itself. Browse through webrings, use things like Wiby and Marginalia every now and then. Found an interesting sire or blog? Don't walk by - leave a message, write an e-mail.
Drop into DC++, create your own share of files.
Try to carve out your own little niche in the modern internet, after all. It's almost useless, I know it first hand: I run a mostly old school YouTube channel for 8 years, and the results are expectably mediocre.
Still, it's the way to go if you do not want to give up. Make your own channel. Write your own site, even if it will be in Neocities. Start your own blog, even if on Blogger.
That's what I do, at least. Adding to my own channel, I try to expand the amount of sites I visit routinely, and I think I made it up to 20 or so. Do note: it sounds like a massive waste of time, but in reality, it is not. 20 sites I visit take less of my time than one Twitter, simply because they are small a slow. I visit a blog, see no new messages - and I close it. SheepishPatio can stay silent for days, so it takes next to zero of my time.
I'm also in the very slow process of writing my own website as well. I now it will likely be another futile attempt of trying to feel a touch of good times, but I like it like that. I'm beaten alright, but I do not want to give up on good old days.

I've got little to add besides what's already been said. The consolidation of internet traffic hasn't resulted in an increase in quality by any means- if anything, it's the opposite.
I think one major problem is that a natural cycle has been disrupted by monopolies. 'Enshitification' is a reasonable consequence of companies resting on their laurels and developing mission-creep. They should die off and competitors should take their place, offering more choice and variety. When they own 99% of the market though- they're become too big to fail and the situation just gets worse and worse.

I share these feelings too. Everywhere is a “walled garden” but inside all of those gardens is actually braindead, ads, or social engineering(it feels like). I appreciate forums like this where you don’t need an account to just look. I just look at things I’m not much of a poster, so it’s always nice to just see and not get forced to make an account especially with a phone number.

I was thinking about this a bit this afternoon and, just as an aside, I think some of these impressions are compounded because we as a collective here at SheepishPatio are getting a bit older. This is just an impression, mind, but I suspect that the vast majority of this forum range from one side of Millenial or Gen X to another; 28 to 40, say. As you get older, you to tend to 'venerate' (or maybe metastasize) into a more potent version of who you've always been. You get familiar with what you like and are set in your ways. The internet and society as a whole is an evolving beast, and things don't stay the same for long.
For me, I don't really mind Discord because it's basically just a better version of MSN Messenger, which I grew up with. If I'd grown up with AOL, IRC, or more forum-centric culture I'd probably hate it more. I don't use Xitter or TikTok, but I'm certain in 20 years Zoomers will be nostalgic for how they were in the "good-ol' days". You can see it happening right before your eyes with Vine.

I can send dozens of articles about the ways Google, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and other massive sites made themselves and subsequently the internet in general worse for... well, for various reasons, but primarily, of course, to squeeze even more moneys out of the users. The latest example in the local web is our russian vk.com thing, which at some point was awesome and a thing of its own. But during the recent year it was pretty much completely bought out by Gazprom gigantic corpo asses, who completely remade it and separated it into two sites: a broken copy of YouTube that barely works, and some fucked up mix of Instagram and Facebook. Back in the days it was a social site of its own, which easily blew Facebook out of the water, while allowing a very good video hosting along the way, plus a decent way to post pictures as well - all in one package with an awesome interface. Alas, those days are gone.

And those are only superficial problems. What about world in general? In my country it gets worse since 2014. Do I even need to tell you why? Since our glorious leaders decided to take back Crimea, a lot of things got way worse. Being banned from international economy has its consequences. For use, average Ivans, at least.
Aside from my country starting one of the wars, there are several others right there, right now, not counting other tensions. What about global warming? What about omnipresent problems with our food? What about constant stream of bad news in our datascapes? Et cetera.

I mean, it is possible that we are getting nostalgic. It is possible that current zoomers will be nostalgic too.
Nostalgia doesn't change the fact that things are actually getting worse, and might as well get even worse in the future.

But as a matter of fact, the more I learn about facts and recent history, the more my nostalgia gets replaced with anemoia. Personally I think it was objectively better before I even was born, during 50's-80's. If we talk about USSR or US, at least. But that's a discussion for another topic, I guess.

the OG concept of the internet as liberating force is gone and our home - our only home - is pmuch desecrated it is tiring indeed but people are still here and are still posting cool stuff so its never over.
also the myth of some "normie" out there who is "fine by all of this" is completely false. Ive yet to meet a person irl or online who likes internet as it is now its just that being cynical about it far easier than being responsible about it especially when you can blame all of this on some "normie" being that supposedly exists and is everywhere.

Internet is not social media. Internet itself as a system is very reliable but Twitch/Youtube/Twitter are not. But people dont use internet they use 3 or 4 specific networks. Saving data on your own devices as a practice is becoming difficult coz these network are deliberately obscuring ways to copy data as such people are not benefiting from internets inherit data redundancy.

Guys start scraping websites, seed torrents make your websites or contribute to something complains wont get us anywhere.

You could probably boil down every major problem Youtube has ever had down to "advertisers", if only for the simple fact that Youtube hemorrhages money and always has.

I've spoken to people before who have actually worked on Google search, and the problem, as it was explained to me, was actually a little different. The quality has been going down for quite some time because the actual algorithm for Google search is getting to be way too complicated to maintain or update. The entire codebase is way, way, too big for any one person to understand it- so even simple tweaks can have disastrous outcomes. Hard to stay competitive when your strategy has to be making as few changes as possible.

Internet is not reliable. Link rot, lost media, attacks on sites like Wayback Machine, et cetera, et cetera. Reliability of the Twitch/YouTube/Twitter is just one little piece of it.
Even then though I was rather talking about reliability of YouTube as a file hosting service rather than a social media. Arguably, as a social media, it is quite reliable. What is even a reliability of a social media?
As a file hosting service though, there is barely anything reliable. MediaFire, Google Drive, Youtube, whatever - all of those can delete your whole drives/clouds/channel/whatever at a whim, and massive amount of data will be lost at a snap of someone's fingers.
Images get deleted routinely. TinyPic's purge was massive. Imgur is planning to do something similar.
I'm not even touching the question of infrastructure. It looks reliable, yes, but if you think about it?
The moment there are protests or something, goverment blocks users rather easily. Anyone heard of chinese internets? The Great Chinese Firewall and stuff? Keep in mind that you never know the moment when your government will decide to built one of their own.
Besides, no internet infrastructure ever was tested in a time of a serious stress, like warfare. I doubt it will fare well. Especially given modern EMPs and whatever else is used. I mean, they say a simple solar flare can make massive troubles, so, yeah.
All in all, I can only repeat it again: internet is hardly as reliable as people think it is.

I'm not talking about Eastern Bloc. I'm talking about USSR. And USSR was quite fine. My parents grew up there, and they have only the warmest memories. Heck, we never even had the atomic craze. While USA schoolboys were used to duck-and-cover drills, their parents buying personal bunkers, USSR was pretty chill.
And Brezhnev was about the best leader since Lenin. I don't know who you can ask, but I can, like, guarantee that most people will confirm my words.
Then, USSR in the 70's was pretty much in its zenith before Perestroika and other things went down. I could describe some interesting points of it, but, yeah, it would be off the topic.
It's just, like, I have a hard time ignoring not writing at least a few words, since most westerners know next to nothing about USSR.

This thing can co-exist with the one that is desribed by me. As a matter of fact, they usually do. A surprising number of systems are built upon tons of tons of older code, algorithms no one knows about, et cetera. It is hard to describe in two words, but that's a fairly common problem.
It happens more often - and therefore it is easier to describe it - in old factories. When a factory gets upgraded again, again, and again, but at the center of the factory there's still some old PC from the 1985, running DOS and floppies, and since the whole factory is built pretty much around that old PC, the owners have to maintain it.
Such things are a reason why it is easier to build a new factory rather than to upgrade an old one: untangling that web of upgrades that were made in different decades, with specific programs that were written to run relying on older programs, that were in turn written to rely on even older programs - it's a mess.
So yeah, similar thing happens with software on ocassion as well. But it doesn't necessarily nullify that upgrades that Google actually did make were made with intention to make it worse. These are two different issues which might as well exist together.
Both are adding to one sum of nothing good for the internet in general though.

For what it's worth, I'm slightly too young to have experienced a more decentralised Internet. I remember when things felt less suffocating and more fun, sure, but ultimately I use the same sites now as I did when I was 12. So no, I don't think it's just a nostalgia thing.

Internet is very reliable by design its peak cold war military tech after all it would take more than a nuke to kill internet its even feasible to have internet without metallurgy its that good. But specific networks/systems/websites are not.
Basic rule of backups is to have at-least 3 copies of data so when you upload a video on YouTube thats only 1 copy if YouTube decides to delete it its gone but thats youtube not internet if some good soul decided to download the video and upload it to nico nico (like it used to be!) then its 2 copies. not so bad. But nobody engages with internet anymore only with a couple networks. As such it may seem like internet as a whole is now unreliable but thats not true its these networks that are unreliable.
Your goverment is blocking and controlling access to these specific networks not to the whole internet and despite all the talk they failed to build their own runet same with China.
People relying on shitty monopolistic service providers is not The Internet problem its a political issue.

In a more civilized time we would have no giant data centers but a million 4chan instances and all the shared data would be stored on each persons computers achieving perfect data integrity, redundancy and so on. socially unimportant data would be lost important stuff would have data redundancy similar to that of bible.

I don't know why you feel it is important to argue about semantics of the particular words while confirming my statements in general, but alright, let's call it "particular networks" instead of "internet".
Though I think everyone here understands that networks are integral part of the internet. Internet might work via IP over avian carriers system, alright, but it will obviously be very different internet from the internet of today, much like the old web via the telephone lines is very different from the web of today.
It's like saying my car has a reliable engine because it could still function when I lost a cylinder. I could drive with 3 cylinders, yes - as a matter of fact, I drove over 200 kilometers with 3 cylinders - but it was hardly the same experience despite still being of the same model and make, and factually functional. Something along those lines.

Not even just that, "free speech" has been twisted so much over the past few years the places that claim they are "free speech" either literally just aren't and still censor or filled with not people I wanna be around. Once the internet used to be chill, you could be edgy and say the no no words and whatever (can we here? I don't often but we see how far the censorship went once a bit of it was allowed in, I'm against arbitrary blocks, what and how you're saying it is what actually matters not what words you use) but its like no one really meant it, it was all fun, now you can't say much no matter the context yet so many people do seem genuinely spiteful even over the slightest disagreements (probably product of algorithms), no creative cursing or slurs required to get it across, thats what this modern top down enforced toxic positivity gets you.

I hated Spotify when I used it, I used it the old school way, just listening to the artists and albums I liked, and they constantly kept dissapearing from my "library" due to copyright, went back to collecting FLACs and CDs. I listen to less music now but its a lot more intentional and meaningful than playing everything to death as background noise on Spotify. They also kept breaking my adblock constantly which was the final straw.

Not the reliance on the centralized services but I think that's a good thing, people learning that the government is not their friend and they should learn how to get past roadblocks they put in place, of course this would also apply to corporations and centralized services and so on. In the west most people worship the government and big corporations who work together to oppress us without anyone even noticing and saying its for our convenience.

Pisses me off like 3 years ago I somehow went down a rabbit hole clicking through links, I think I started on some neocities that I don't remember how I found and for like 2 hours it was like what going on the internet for the first time was like, even better arguably with instant loads and knowing what im looking for, which sites seem actually genuine and then my private browser crashed, I wish I saved some of those sites.

Used to upload some stuff on YT years ago but I just rage quit one day as I'm still stuck with my 2010 mindset, getting copyright takedowns for game music that was fine before, while pranks and other garbage are propped up on the front page I got tired of it, you could say I let them win by leaving by choice. Sometimes I wanna stream again to just scream into the void. I don't really wanna bother running my own site, its a lot of work, my written content is more useful on other sites where people may actually find and use it.

This so much, nostalgia is a cope and meaningless, proven by the fact that some people will be nostalgic for anything including very objectively bad things.
I don't even have that much nostalgia honestly, I have some good memories but thats about it, they're not extensive, I have basically no nostalgia for things most others would, maybe because I realize that those things for me were bad back then so I'm not gonna remember them just because I'm "supposed to", I can acknowledge my life used to suck but the world used to be objectively, measurably, undeniably better, meanwhile my life is probably better than its ever been before but the wider world and nearly everything within is worse than it used to be ₁₅+ years ago. I wish I was born like 10-20 years sooner (and in the US preferably) so I got to enjoy more of a less shitty world.

About to order another 24TB HDD, gotta save what remains of the internet before it actually goes down for good, hoarding been one of my bigger hobbies these past few years, I wish i started earlier and could've saved a lot more, kills me how much stuff I let slip by, as I've said only good thing about modern internet/technology is that now I can actually be my own datacenter for all the stuff I cared about in the past when it would've been unimaginable to store even a portion of it but it does also suck that we have all this hardware and nothing current to do with it.

i'm mainly just tired of how political everything's gotten. everyone is easily manipulated by negativity and hate, which is created through division. everyone thinks in a tribalistic manner, categorizes, and isolates themselves to exclusive like-minded groups as they demonize anyone who doesn't think like them. nobody wants to understand or have a conversation. nobody wants to make the effort of finding a middle ground. it's just immediate hate and spewing insults. "why are all (x) so stupid??" "if you're (x) then you better unfollow me" it's all so tiresome. it's exhausting seeing how much these people are controlled by their negativity like puppets by the websites that curate what they're exposed to, like twitter. it's made me appreciate kindness more recently, and how important it is to find positivity in the world. even kindness can reach the ones you don't like. being willing to talk to others is how you get to them. not breeding more hatred. every day we're losing the soul and heart of our humanity, and the internet has become a reflection of that dying heart. it's sterile, sad, and lifeless. the people aren't the same, and the ignorance is taking over.
