Yes, although it's for the better. It can suck you in, leading you down dark paths. I've gotten far more done than I have in awhile since 4chan went down.

I've never seen anything that looked incredibly inorganic on /v/ that wasn't obviously "anon is shilling his indie game". Bug Fables was the last big offender that comes to mind and even then, they were a regular poster on the gamedev threads, so I think it got a bit of a pass.
Most of the time people say there's "inorganic" or "shill" threads on /v/, it's sour grapes and for things like Coffin of Leyley and Andy. "Flavor of the month" for 16 months, 26,000 steam reviews, and approaching 3k results on Rule 34 - there's no way people could want to talk about that; buy an ad.

Kaper Mainstream attention is not the cause. its perfectly imaginable to have a very popular 4chan. Its just that generally people started to take 4chan (and internet in general) seriously because people wanted internet to be something useful including 4chan remember the whole Scientology debacle? yeah.

damas Even if fake wouldn't surprise me if a good few jannies have stepped down, why would you want to carry on moderating on 4chan after you find out the admins of the site haven't bothered updating their software in over ten years nor made an effort on their security backend to keep your details safe in case this ever did happen? Now these folks can probably never get a normal irl job for rest their lives and expecting them to carry on duties as normal would be silly.

The really funny part is seeing other places react to it with tech news comment sections and other forums rejoicing and some even depating if this should be considered "ethical hacking" as well as asking for the dox of "all the users" or asking (and really, I quote from Ars Technica comments) " so did they find Elon's account yet ?"
When really it's all because of The worst kind of posters being mad at what they perceive to be overbearing moderation on the website.
It's wild how within 4chan, a lot of anons were raging at how restrictive certain boards had become while the outside world thinks it's still all 2008 /b/ and 2016 /pol/.

Can we get our boards back already ? I miss talking about trains on /n/ and post-avant-jazzcore on /mu/

Were janitors actually creating accounts with their real names and/or personally identifyable e-mail addresses or something? That's crazy. Maybe the application process required real names, but I don't know how such a requirement would be enforced for an unpaid online volunteer position in the first place.

I only used 4chan to shitpost on one thread in /vg/. That's it. I'm sad that I can't go back but honestly it isn't a big deal to me. I've also never cared about the time delay and captcha for posts. Dunno if I'll return to that cesspool because of how compromised it became. Thank god I'm patient and never shared my email with the site

whatever Reportedly at least a few were using .edu domains for their email, which I've seen some speculation was due to students using their university-issued email accounts.

I can't imagine signing up for anything persomal under a uni account, let alone a mod-lite position. It's a really odd thing to crop up in the middle of this whole story.

Ok, I'll admit them using their personal and university emails on their fucking 4chan mod accounts is extremely dumb and that its natural selection at that point, but even then you'd think you'd think as one of the web's most iconic sites they'd have more systems in place to protect this data and I don't think its wrong them expecting this protection considering 4chan's size and reach.
