IT Certs Study Info

Fellas, fellas, I'm new to this board so go easy on me. My job won't pay to certify me. Therefore, to make myself look more appealing to potential future employers I need to cert up! Please, does anyone have any hidden OP study resources that will help me out? I currently just want to get Sec+ out of the way and then go for Azure/AWS certs. I know Microsoft Learn and Amazon are both awesome resources, so please if you have anything else for me let me know. I'm mighty grateful in advance 🤠

I'm not super qualified but my company has a private account and resources for certifications

I did use tryhackme.com for a bit and they offer certificates that are supposedly recognised, so that might be worth looking into.

i'll be doing the microsoft ones some point this year

what is your current job and what are your responsibilities?
what job do you want to end up doing? I am a higher-end IT engineer, and a wizard, so LMK and I may be able to advise a bit

in general certifications are fake in that work experience trumps them and there's tons you can get that will fool normal management who don't know the difference but a CTO will know better.

that said check out Cybrary. Last I checked they're free and the classes are not too easy nor too hard

Lumeinshin I could give tryhackme a shot. I think I've looked into it once before and decided I wasn't smart enough to do it lol. Definitely something for the todo list. If you don't mind me asking, is your company in tech?

They have some pretty entry level certs you can do that will go over basically everything. Theres some free stuff that is worth at least starting. I had stopped my premium membership but I might re-pay for it later in the year.

There is some more complex stuff there but I can vouch for their basics, at least its up to date as opposed to computia's certs. they have questions about THE NEW FASTEST STORAGE... msata... 😅

friffri Man it feels like I see a lot more of that shit day-to-day now. We need you to get this license so we can tell this auditor someone here is certified for that. Buncha bureaucratic bull you ask me. Like what is the point of having the credential if you can't do the job because you're never put in the field. Idk it feels like it's happening everywhere.

rofl yeah I checked it out and the more I look into tryhackme the more it has stuff that I actually want to study, and may use at my current job tbh. Wild stuff.

I can't help as I'm not in IT, but I have a friend who recently got a job in security and has been doing a lot of certifications, all paid for by his company.

I don't know if he's exaggerating or what, but according to him his daily job is like 50% studying to get a new useless certifications. He's in a consultancy agency, basically they find clients who request experts on tool X and he needs to get X's certification in like 1 week so that his company can get the client by claiming that they've got an expert on X.
Then, after his company gets a client, he still barely gets to do actual work. That certification was just a useless tick on the requirements list, they can put anyone to work on that job.

Anyone here got any data certs? I'm getting my bachelor's in Data Science and I don't know if I should throw some money at data certs or not.

sungen my 2 cents is to get working. See if you can do some real paid work and put that on your resume instead. You'll also get a better feel for what companies actually look for with their workers. I've learned by far the most trying to solve an issue to complete a project then in any class or training for any cert

that said I don't know shit about data science. can you get into gig work like programmers can?

GANDALF oh definitely, most data work shy of being a part of a data or marketing team is doing client based work. though I would disagree with your first claim, as much as practical and resume experience is worth it, like the IT field, data work is so diverse it's typically a good idea to prove that you're certified to do shit

sungen if you say so. What's better, being certified to do a job, or have proof and references that you have done the job successfully already?

that said I don't know your position and requirements. I know a scientist that wouldn't be allowed near his position without a PHD or Masters degree. He told me they have positions that they will not grant to a scientist, no matter how competent they are, without a PHD. Even if they know the science perfectly. boggles my mind. makes me laugh because you don't even need a highschool diploma to be a Systems Engineer

GANDALF honest answer? both lmao. but i'm currently studying for my data science degree (which most places require you to get an internship), so i definitely need that for the experience side of things, the question was if anyone here has gotten any data certificates and if they were worth anything to get now.
