What it says on the tin. Share obscure videogames that seemingly nobody but you has played, but with the caveat that they can't be terrible or boring.

Firstly, Perimeter. This one is a weird Russian RTS whose gimmick is terraforming. You generate power by building pylons on flat terrain, which then harvest energy from a circle around them. Many units can disturb or go through terrain and the process of making units is unique too. Instead of building tanks or planes, you make simple little goons that you can then morph into higher tier units in the field or devolve back into lower tier units. Overall, it's very fun and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes RTS. Don't play the expansion or the second game though, both of those are shit.

Secondly, I'd like to share Original War. This one's not very unique gameplay-wise, it plays like any RTS from the early 2000's or late 90's, but it has a very unique story and an interesting artstyle. Basically, it's about the US and Soviets fighting each other in 200.000BC for natural resources with suicide bomber cavemen, metal bawxes and solar powered cars.

A few years ago I stumbled upon this game that was in development called Lonely Star, which was a really surreal survival game that took place in the southwestern United States in a native doomsday cult where you had to fight demons and the ghosts of conquistadors during your spirit quest. There was a demo uploaded that, while rough, showed a lot of promise.

The dev went silent 5 years ago and his site is now down. I genuinely think he may have died. I'm not sure the rules of this forum and I'll defer to the admin but if anyone is interested in playing the demo to get a taste of this weird little unfinished gem I have it uploaded on mega and can post a link to it if that's allowed. I know it's silly but it's such a unique little game that I don't want it to be forgotten to the sands of time.

Hypnospace Outlaw is pretty fun. 90's web sim/detective "game".

Not exactly a SUPER obscure game, but has anyone here played Billy Hatcher? I was watching a speedrun of it today

I was gifted Bedlam and really enjoyed it, rain on the PS3 was also a small gem

            dog
I havent actually, but because i was always a sega guy as a kid i saw him around a lot, sonic racing games, eyetoy and such

I cant think of any games off the top of my head, will post again if i do lol

            a month later

Going to go with an action RPG made by Square in 1999 called Threads of Fate (Dewprism in Japan). I've personally never seen it talked about. It was intended to be a light-hearted, relatively simple game for kids with a bright, charming, and dream-like visual design (with very big shoes).

You choose to play one of two characters, Mint or Rue, who are both searching for a mysterious artifact called the relic. Rue believes it can restore a dead friend to life. Mint wants to use it for world domination. The story is essentially the same in both routes, with some differences in cutscenes and dungeons, and if you beat both you unlock a secret ending. Mint's route is a bit more light-hearted and more fun to play imo, since Mint is the best character in the game.

The atmosphere is strangely contemplative and evocative in a way that only games from this period can be. It's a mixture of the '90s character design, the limited details in the graphics, and the soundtrack by Junya Nakano, which is just superb and sets the mood perfectly.

It's a fun, mysterious game. Almost everything is left to the imagination, which I like. Highly recommended if you like old playstation games.

Well, I don't think mine's as obscure as most of these wonderful other replies, I have fond memories of Maximo Ghosts to Glory on ps2 from when I was a kid. Epic thread 🙂

gemisthon dang that looks gud. definitely trying it out thanks for putting me on

                gemisthon
Omg thank you for posting about it, I'd seen screenshots of it but never knew the name!
Definitely one for my 'to play' list 😄
cyanraptor Maximo was always brought up, only ever by like one person but its definitely one of those games 1 person per group has played, and nobody else
I do aim to play it some time cus it looks fun

Pit People. Wonderful turn based strategy/sort of creature collector game made by the guys who made Castle Crashers and Battleblock Theatre. Surprisingly good competitive scene as well. Never took off though, since the combat was kinda slow paced and unintuitive to learn beyond the absolute basics.

I personally really liked making really stupid themed teams and going into multiplayer with them to see other players reactions. It had the sort of unwaveringly friendly community you could only find in a niche indie game like it.

fargit Oh c'mon, Hypnospace isn't TOO obscure I'd think, though are you excited for the sequel? Supposed to take place in the mid 00s scene of the internet.

Woland Dude you've gotta post it, that looks sick and I love games with dead devs.

For me it's gotta be The Desolate Hope by Scott Cawthon, the same dude who did FNAF, definitely a quirky and niche title especially given how it's been overshadowed by the double handful of FNAF games, but it's a rad little RPG that I would recommend to anyone who DOESN'T have epilepsy.

sungen Yes, I am excited for the Sequel. Jay Tholen is a good dev.

I played Perimeter, OP! I loved the deranged storyline which has, as I remember it, these three ideologies battling over a some new (maybe psychically created?) realm of existence trying to escape it/perfect it. I feel like Perimeter was from a time when there was lots of RTS experimentation: Warcraft 3 with its heroes is the big one that changed the course of RTSs forever, of course, but also things like Company of Heroes/Dawn of War with its squads, Kohan (also with squads, but with more flexibility AND heroes), Maelstrom (with more terraforming), Exile, with its multiple map levels (I think there was a mech-building RTS with something similar, too).

As for an obscure game that I loved, it has to be Metal Walker. This was a Gameboy Color RPG where you played as a kid on a post-apocalyptic world who controlled a robot. You fought other robots and found element cores (air, water, and earth) that you could plug into your robot to change its form and its stats. The battles had you essentially playing pool: you'd launch your robot around the arena to bound off walls, avoid obstacles and traps, and slam into the enemy robot to deal damage. You also could scan enemy robots to get their special abilities.

Aqua Aqua! It's this PS2 puzzle game in which is kinda like a weird tetrislike game in which you get pieces that comes in random shapes and either they increase or decrease the landscape. And basically you will get water or meteors at random that you either make lakes or destroy the land to the point where there might be a hole in the world. The entire goal of the game is to basically make lakes and burn them for points all the while you try not to make water fall off the world or into the hole or else you make the little character drown. I've had plenty of fun with it and even played Wetrix on the Dreamcast! Which was basically the same but really fun puzzle score based game.

Unsure of the level of obscurity, but Virtual Warfare back when Wildtangent was still around. Never knew how to properly play, but what a game.

It might be cheating as the fun in the game may be from my nostalgia, but I remember getting a game for the DS called CONTACT. It was a grasshopper title that has your main character get swept up in a conflict with a professor, and stranded space pirates who land on your planet. You explore different continents, obtain better gear through exploration and item drops, and get recipes for food that will give you very generous buffs. You also had a pet mechanic that revolved around interacting with the professor's cat/dog? where the more time you spend with it would give you a summon that does scaling damage. It also had a cool island you could visit thru Wi-Fi, but it was frustrating to figure out for the time (WEP connection only? Really?). I don't know if it would hold up from a gameplay perspective, but I can say with confidence that it has a lot of charm, and the ending is one I still remember clearly.

I'll leave a track so it might jog a noggin.

@Woland I'd be interested in checking this out, if you're willing to pass that mega link. Game looks pretty cool.

                      Sandro
I do like the music, I'd never heard of the game surprisingly, sounds neat tho

i'm okay with posting that mega link Woland if you want to at some point. if the game isnt available elsewhere i dont see any moral qualms that could pop up. Hopefully the dev just got annoyed and decided he didnt like it, as opposed to dying anyway.

There's some awesome yume nikki fangames that I don't see talked about in the larger scale of things, specifically Withers and Yuque, screenshots shown here respectively

if you're not a big fan of the original Yume Nikki, i doubt these'll tickle your fancy, but if you're a fan they're worth checking out
