This is a thread for free games that can be downloaded, leaning moreso on informational than chatty.
I think it could be good to have some more informational threads.

Does not necessarily have to be open source or a clone of another existing game.

Sonic Robo Blast 2

This was THE game for me when I was 11 or so. I played and modded it to hell and back, Great fun game with tons of content. Available on practically all Operating Systems
Older Versions here, 2.1.25 was the last version pre-rework
There are also many other mods such as srb2 Persona and SRB2Infinity, available on the forum

Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart

A mod/total conversion of the above SRB2, but turning it into an online kart racer. Features many mods and characters too. An easy recommendation

Minetest and MineClone (MOD)

These two have been put together as MineClone is a mod for minetest, but is usually a go-to for people playing it.
Survival Sandbox game, similar to Minecraft.
Open Source block building game, is available on Windows/MacOS/Linux and even Android

HoloCure

This is a game similar in vein to Vampire Survivors, but themed around HoloLive VTubers. I have not personally played it yet, although i've heard nothing but good things. Seems to be a download and play game, and its free so it fits.

Flesh, Blood & Concrete

A horror RPG game with post Soviet aesthetics. The plot is extremely weak but the atmosphere and soundtracks are god tier. You will explore an abandoned building and collect Soviet style objects along the way that are useless besides mixing in a sense of nostalgia, which for some of them I can relate back to my childhood a little bit just like many other Chineses.

BABBDI

A 3D exploration game that I have also mentioned in another thread. You will explore an abandoned (yeah, again) dystopian city and interact with all the local schizos. The ultimate goal is to get a train ticket and leave the city. The game is extremely atmospheric, offering a depressive and liminal experience. It is like an Eastern Europe walking simulator.

Narcissu

This one is quite well known, but if you have never heard about it, it is a visual novel where you will go on an one-way trip with a girl who is approaching the end of her life. It is not the kind of games that bombs you with existential monologues or philosophical discussions, but rather offers a soothing and immersive experience that will lead you to resonate with the characters and reflect upon your own life. The 2nd one provides a backstory but I prefer the 1st.

Digital Seclusion

A short visual novel about a NEET who is obsessed and knowledgeable with visual novels from the 90s and 00s getting lured by a digital feminine spirit who manifests as game characters to abandon his body and devote his consciousness to her. The game borrowed many elements from the PC-98 era and almost walked you through the history of visual novels, but the ending is a bit abrupt.

Good Job!

You play as a cute girl who is stuck in a time loop. To ease her boredom, she decided to kill her coworker in a new way every day. The true ending really isn't surprising to me, I enjoyed it nonetheless.

New Super Mario Bros. Versus

Remember the Mario Vs Luigi mode in NSMB for the Nintendo DS? This is an exact copy of it that can be played online.
I have played some matches with my friends and it's a perfect mix of trolling each other and tryharding.
Give it a shot with some buddies.

Just a fun RPG maker feeling game where combat has you making your own spells every turn which is a cool idea. I like the art too. The game feels like one of those passion projects.

Magna Carta: The Phantom of Avalanche

Slightly above average turn based JRPG game. I really like the graphics on older games and this one has some of those good ol graphics if you know what I mean.

Cave Story

It's Cave Story. Game probably doesn't need to be listed here because everyone should have played it by now. One of my favorite games. Soundtrack, boss fights, level design, character design, it's all there.

Spelunky

It's Spelunky, just play it. It'll be hard and fun!

Daggerfall Unity

Remake of the classic RPG in the Unity Engine. It's much more stable, looks cleaner, options for mods, more control settings, and so many improvements just all over the place, command line is a big one.
One of the largest worlds ever made in video games. Brutally long mazes for dungeons, tons of player freedom, good fantasy world simulator.

Open TTD

One of the best games for teaching yourself efficient ways to move people from place to place.

Touhou Fumo Racing

A pretty funny racing that game that has fumo as the drivers. In regards to the launcher you can you the itch.io launcher application but I don't think you have to. Pretty fun to I just hope they add multiplayer which I think they will.

YUME NIKKI / FANGAMES

There's a good chance you've heard of these, but I'll still give it a shot. Yume Nikki is a surreal horror exploration game. You walk (or bike) around your dreams.

It also has many fangames, Yume 2kki is a collaborative fan sequel and also the first one that comes to mind.

The original has a free Steam version, but both of them are playable online on https://ynoproject.net/ (with an offline mode if you don't want to see other players,) along with a slew of other fangames.

A game that is based on the art of Francisco Goya. Liking it so far but I am only in the middle of playing, my only complaints right now are that you cant rebind the controls as far as I can tell and it seems you can just sprint past the enemy a lot of the time. It was made by a group of students though so I wont be to harsh, still overall enjoy it.

A great horror FPS with some genuinely scary moments, I played this as a kid, and even after all these years, it still managed to spook me. Lots of references to conspiracy theories: Fake moon landing, human mutilation, new world order/evil vaccines. Game is as entertaining as it is enlightening.
Also on reddit, someone made a restored version.

Old game, though still receives love from the developers, also there is a community too. The main goal of the game is to catch cheese in a 2D Platformer Environment, there are other game modes too like survival and racing.

The game got some notoriety after an youtuber recorded it, I must say its great considering that its "heavily influenced" from Quake (not that I'm insulting Quake - its a good game - just that most games that are heavily influenced don't manage to catch my attention) the high speed movement catched my attention.

Sburatorul

Nobody mentioned Enemy Territory yet? I used to have so much fun in LAN parties with me mates playing that. And about a year and a half ago, official servers have been set up, so you're looking to play the game vanilla, now you can. It's a shame that not a lot of people seem to know about the game, so the servers are always empty.
