God I hate webp files

Id mention inkscape
No idea if its really underrated
Hell I dont really use it
But its a vector based graphics editor.

h8net QOwnNotes is a great piece of software. I was using obsidian but swapped to it recently. I do all my markdown stuff in it (at least for site update drafts)

A good piece of software thats definitely underrated/unheard of is OpenAudible, its a paid piece of software that converts audible audiobooks into m4a files and other drm free formats. I should really enquire about getting some kind of discount code or affiliate link for the site 🤔 I do like it that much that i'd endorse it... inb4 some massive controversy where theyre actually evil

What made you switch off of Obsidian? I moved over from Joplin a month ago and have been really enjoying it, although getting it to sync with my phone was a pain.

For the question topic: I do a lot of audio related things and REAPER is the end-all of DAWs for me. It's smaller than 1GB, hyper customizable, and endlessly flexible. It has way more than you'd realize once you start right clicking everything, and was made by the same dude that did Winamp.
yt-dlp, ffmpeg, and mpv have all been really great to me as well. I ended up using mpv as a photo viewer due to it's borderless UI and opening speed.

There was nothing that forced me to move or anything, obsidian is a fine piece of software. I am very much someone who would rather use a FOSS version of something if it meets my needs, and QOwnNotes does everything i was using obsidian for.
I'll likely use obsidian on android if i ever end up using my android tablet for notes/blogposts etc. I currently dont sync the files, although I think i'd probably use rsync to do that

Foxit PDF Reader. I read a lot of eBooks as PDFs and I've found a lot of joy in using Foxit. It's nothing special, really. You can open multiple documents as tabs in the same app, search, overview of chapters, etc.. I read Dune on the app for Android, and as a WH40K players having a nice PDF reader helps me quickly build army lists. Also, ISO a decent PDF editor. I have Scribus now and enjoyed using Microsoft Publisher when I tried it at the library. Any suggestions?

deadbeef is a good native alternative to running foobar2000 through Wine on Linux, which itself also works fine.

      For me, probably Emacs.
Ages ago I decided to give it a shot for "a week" just to see why people meme on it, and it turned out to be one of the best damn programs I have ever used. There is just something so nice about having a set of software really tightly integrated together but also extremely hackable. Now I do most of my actual work in it.

        Plasmawiz
I tried getting converted to the church of emacs, but I just couldnt get my head around it well enough to want to keep using it.
I tried Witchmacs which had a bunch of plugins and such to make it better (?) and I did like it, I just don't think it suits what I use really. no shade to the emacs guys though it seems like a comfy way to live

mGBA and it's predecessor Visual Boy Advanced have been mainstays on my systems since my second PC all the way back in 2004. Other than a handful of evergreen games there's been no other piece of software so prevalent.

Fantasy preach! I use gimp almost every day, and I see no reason to switch to Photoshop, especially with Adobe's shitty decisions (like seriously, a cancellation fee?)

Lumeinshin I've only briefly been tempted by and but decided shortly after I started learning it that it really wasn't worth my time.
I understand why people get fascinated by it, but it wasn't for me.

Not sure who might need this one, but...
Agent Ransack - reliably search for text inside all kinds of files. I used to use Notepad++ before I found this one, but Notepad++ tends to crash if you load tons of particularly large files into it. Like, 10000 or over. Agent Ransack doesn't crash and keeps working.
Invaluable in my line of work, really, when you gotta check for text in multiple unknown formats.

            • Nah replied to this.

I'm a pretty big fan of Geany. It's a text editor similar to Notepad++.

These days I've settled on MusicBee for my music player. I just like the look of it.

I can second the recommendation for Mp3Tag. It's very handy for fixing music tags.

I'll also throw out Fedora Media Writer. It's my go to when I'm putting an ISO onto a USB stick.

Neat, I was going to ask why not use grep or select-string but the software looks like it can scan office files.

Speaking of select-string, I think an underrated software that's only used by sysadmins is PowerShell (specifically 7+). Yeah yeah I know it's made by Macroshit but I've seen that it can do the same core jobs which Unix scripting can do (I use both). It's a cool software for windows users to learn. Just be sure to use the open source version.

Late_Settler These days I've settled on MusicBee for my music player.

Same here. I tried out numerous different music players but always came back to MusicBee. My only grievance with it is that it doesn't update the database in real time after you add more tracks; other programs like Foobar2k do this.
Also, MusicBee has a pretty good built in tag editor that I've opted for over Mp3Tag.

If you haven't heard of SpinRite, you should give it a look. You boot your computer off of it and it goes through and it fixes bad sectors of hard-drives and is invaluable for data recovery. If you've got something old that you can't get working, it might be worth trying out. It's pricey, but definitely works.
It's actually quite old too, v1 was released all the way back in 1987, but it's still seeing active development by the original author to this day.

This is honestly very understandable. Emacs for me has been something that I've sort of crammed into my workflow, I think for the better, but it wasn't without a lot of trial and error. Something I've noticed is you either really love Emacs, or don't care for it at all, which is fine.
