aitserp Pokemon X was the last one I bought, was definitely a low point for the series, game was noticeably easier than the prior entries and was really short. I've heard more recently that dia/pearl was the start of the overly linear games, but it was most noticeable with X/Y. I still enjoyed it and the customisation was cool but it was just underwhelming, maybe i'll revisit it in future to see if I still hold that view

After what you said I do wanna retract my previous statement about all gens past 3. All gens past 3 except for x/y and ORAS let me down. Oddly I really liked x/y despite its easier difficulty and I caught every mon but one (minun) in omega ruby. Other than that, Old school only.

I bought sun/moon and told myself if I do not beat the elite 4 I am done with pokemon forever.
Did not beat the elite four and that game didn't even have an elite 4.
Either way I have no bought one since and will not buy one until the game gets a radical design change. Arceus looked to be a step in the right direction but I need steps not just step.

Am I the only one who thinks pokemon looks better in 2d? Not every game needs to be 3d. Pokemon could be good in 3d if it has effort out into it. the attacks really need to be more than the model rotating back and forth and a particle effect flashing on screen.

They shot themselves in the foot doing like 100+ new pokemon every generation.
Doing proper 3D models for every single monster with all the different animations for moves and such is unreasonable.
They've also obviously run out of good ideas for the monsters.

That's word. Pokemon do not quite work in 3D. If they wanted to go with 3D, I'd say they should've switched the style and go from anime into realistic ones.

As a franchise, Pokemon stagnated very badly as the series went on. I confess I actually really enjoyed Sword, going into it with low expectations helped. I did not get the new one and don't intend to.

I strongly agree that Pokemon is better in 2D. In fact, I had a dream last night of a new Pokemon-like game in the RBY sort of graphics and it was immensely charming.

Even as a 12 year old kid at the time I felt disppointed with the barren towns and environments. The Pokémon designs, the competitive gameplay (if you stick to Smogon rules and the showdown sim) and the online implementation were wonderful though.

Gen VI was the worst at the time until gen VIII for me. I completely dropped the serie when gen VIII was announced and I saw how lazy it was. Also I didn't play LGPE and don't plan on playing it.

I dunno I think I had enough fun with it. The only gens that really felt special to me were 1 2 and 4, the others I played through once and that was enough.

Haven't played the two Switch gens though, and they do look genuinely awful

Overall I feel like the games were a letdown. I remember focusing on the fashion and the meta throughout Gen VI and I think that speaks on the only good addition to those games being character customization. I think the designs were good and the region was big and fun to explore but good Pokemon designs and an interesting region are only pieces of a whole puzzle. The games felt rushed, their story was awful and there was no postgame to speak of beyond the Looker missions (which were fun but not what the game needed). Having a big adventure as a Pokemon Master in the postgame is one of the most important aspects of a Pokemon game and I don't think people appreciate it as much as they should.

I remember Gen VII being a better attempt but those were the last new Pokemon games I played. These days I play the older games on original hardware with my girlfriend and it gives me a much more enjoyable experience than soying out over the newest switch games charging twice as much. Once switch games hit the bargain bin I'll snag all the new games and see how they've held up, but I've heard bad things.

I think the expectations are different depending on the hardware (not just features/graphics), but a GB-DS gets into the game really quick and by being simpler is much easier to pick up and play. Last year I was playing crystal (it was liquid crystal mod i think) and i was picking it up and playing for a bit between other tasks. I was playing on one of those emulation handhelds which likely also helped.
Also helps that the tutorials arent so long or anything in the older games. I think sword/shield or the one after has like an hour of tutorials 😅

I think the problem Pokemon games have always had is that gym leaders arent really thst challenging. Just spam a super effective stab move and win.

I think if the game actually had better concepts for gym battles. Not full blown EV Smogon shit. But instead of a type based gym do strategy based gyms... kind of like the stadium games sips white monster

I liked Legends Arceus, maybe they can do another game like that. Just hopefully they can wait til they have hardware that does the concept justice.

I think the other problem is that they need to spend more time and stop trying to release a new game every year.

My friend has been sorting out his steam deck and wanted my recommendation for the best game in the series to start with
One of my friends suggested black to him, which isn't a bad choice but I think he didn't wanna if he didn't recognise any of the pokemon. I think he's likely to just play blue so I gave him a romhack that adds gbc graphics, but maybe there's a better choice

What pokemon game would you suggest he start with?
(The only one he's ever played was stadium)

As far as mainline games Pokemon Black is pretty good.

If they want to play older games with a twist... Crystal Clear is pretty good. Its a romhack that makes Crystal into an open world experience.
Kanto Expansion Pack is also pretty good. Adds betamons, newer evolutions, and regional variants. Makes kanto feel fresh again. I have had fun with it.
Pokemon Brown and Pokemon Prism are both set in a new region called... Rijon.... Pretty good romhacks. Prism adds mons up to gen 6 and fairy types I believe. Its been a while since I played Brown, I remember enjoying it though.

Pokemon Yellow: Cramorant Edition It replaces Pikachu with Cramorant, which includes alot of the custom animations. Sounds like a gimmick, but Mega Evolutions and starter Pokemon up to gen 6 make this a decent way to replay Yellow.

Okay... I'm going to go be autistic somewhere else now...

I cannot throw any educated opinions on the matter, but the best one out of the few I've tried was Emerald.
I've heard some romhacks are rather good though. So if I'll ever go to play Pokemon again, I'll pick some romhack, though I'm just... not sure which at this point.

Although Gen VI was a really low point in the series, Sun and Moon managed to bring something new to the table and i enjoyed it a fair bit, its not the greatest by any means but it had some fun concepts, but yeah then Sword and Shield released and that game is really really bad.
