Today I just saw a really weird ad for a free 5e material book, on Youtube. I think the person responsible is hoping that the material being free will spread...

Ads are a crazy beast.
There are crazy amounts of opportunity given that most internet users stick themselves to just a few sites, but I do very much feel that you have to sacrifice part of your soul to attain it.
Being site owner/janny I do have to keep in mind some of these strategies and tactics, so i do find it somewhat interesting.

They might just be cheap to make. The shitty game ads would be.

I HATE pharma ads. Holy fuck they are the most disingenuous looking ads. Those people look like actors. They look fake. Barbie looks more human. I imagine it's where failed actors go cause I've never seen a pharma ad that was memorable outside of the horrifying list of side effects. Restless legs? Possibly death but they won't move anymore either way. Headaches? Trade ya for slight anal leakage.

That's a big part of the disingenuousness of it. When I'm doing bad enough that I'm seeking a doctor I am not calling friends for picnics and basketball games. And I would really like it if you didn't just gloss over things like increased risk of suicidal ideation, heart arrhythmia, and
in some "rare cases" convulsions and death. It's not a sales clause to speed through. It's probably the most important part of the ad after what's it for.

I hate all ads but I hate interactive ads the least. Want me to download your shitty sort puzzle game? Let me play for 30 sec as the ad. If your game is good it should get me. If it's shit (and let's be real here, most little games are) I'll at least have a less crap opinion for getting to do something for 30 sec instead of being forced to watch mind-numbing messaging directed at no one in particular that doesn't ever concern me.

Thank you good sir. I like video game music because it has the job of being good and memorable but not distracting. I dont understand why they don't go for this idea instead of just driving inoffensive, one piece fits all, music. Good video. It's sad how while alot of music can be formulaic, corporatism still manages to remove soul from it.

Celebrity endorsements do not help. Has anyone ever been changed their mind because X celebrity said it was a good product? Like a bank using a celebrity. Lil wayne does not give a fuck about first national bank. Everyone knows this. So why make these stupid commercials?

MO I haven't seen those ads for years after using adblockers. The weirdest ones I recall are all shitty mobile game ads that make you doubt the mental health of their creators.

The worst ads are Toomics/TopToon ads. They used to buy up all the ad space. It's some Korean manga publishing farm. I think they use multiple advertiser IDs to get around blocking by publishers. Usually the ads are something suggestive in nature involving, I am not joking, incest. Of course this goes against DoubleClick/Google ToS but they don't care.

Over Easter I was visiting relatives and my brother pulls out his laptop and showed me some youtube videos. He had ads playing before all the videos and during. I asked him " do you want me to install an adblocker? it's really easy to do would take a few seconds." He completely turns me down. "No i'm fine with them they don't really bother me.".
This blew my mind. How are people content with ads? Especially when they are so easy to remove.

yeah its weird, i've offered to install adblockers and such to remove ads and people are always 'noooooo' about it. I think theres the fear of getting punished somehow for using an adblock, and just a general acceptance of the way things are.

Fantasy Well, first you have to like care about the people who produce the content you watch and like them as people.

Then, you have to have been alive back before the ads were scammers and weird mobile games.

Most of the people I like watching are very dependent on ad revenue.

EDIT: If you've ever lived with someone who spent 120 dollars or whatever the hell a month on table a month, and they still had 50 billion ads per 15 minutes, for me at least the ads on Youtube become easy. I'm actually fond of the ads that were on Peacock before it became a paid only service.

So I saw this add that looked kinda cool and I wished I saved it (By cool, I mean it seemed wholesome) where this guy was shilling his 5e supplement (Which is free? They said they hoped that it would spread and good will would cover the ad costs and art costs and so on).

Kinda a shit time to be supporting 5e I think?

I had a look at the GM's Box of Duct Tape little ad video and kofi page and it seems neat. I am not super into DND so I couldnt say much on the quality of the book but its free so no complaints there.
He has had 256x ko-fi donations so hes obviously done something right!

seems like unfortunate timing to release a 5E related thing, I believe there is a CC TTRPG game like DND/Pathfinder that may have been a better pick, but DND is popular so i understand.

I was surfing the web and found this incredibly ugly animated advertisement for a soul food restaurant in Virginia that features De La Soul as 3 anthropomorphic mouths rapping. It's one of the most atrocious pieces of animation I've laid my eyes on, and you really have to see it for yourself.
