Steam deck/ mobile PC thread

Mobile PCs have increased in both power and availability, you can get ones with 8+gb of RAM and 2-4 cores easily. Steam deck being the most prominent.

Does this category of gaming devices interest you? Would you use this as a mini PC or would they not be suitable enough?
For owners of one, what do you like most about it and you you use them for things you wouldnt before?

I don't see how it's a mini-PC, I thought Chrome Books or whatever were mini-PCs?

To me the Steam Deck is like a replacement for Cable or a Console (I used to watch Netflix on a Wii).

There is a fancy handheld UI, but it has a 'switch to desktop mode' button which is just a KDE desktop environment, and the OS itself is a fork of arch linux.
It reminds me of the Razer Switchblade, which was supposed to be a handheld pc for playing wow and such on the go, but could be docked as well. it had its own UI but wouldve ran an intel Atom processor and windows under the hood.

Chromebook is for internet only. It cannot play games. Or at least games from this century. It'll run doom 2 just fine. Anything more than that is asking for it to set on fire.

Anyone know anything about fake Gameboys? I just wanna play gba games not on my phone and I feel the steam deck is probably using too much power for the job. The one I see on advertised on /v looks too small to fit in my hands comfortably. It's looking like steam deck might be my best option even if it is killing a fly with a 12 gauge.

Lumeinshin So it's better than those damn Chromebook ads that try to sell you the Chromebook on gaming, but then the ad has a little disclaimer saying "This computer can't actually play this game" (Or any other game really)?

I prefer a nice laptop. Mine isn't specifically for gaming but it has a good graphics card, a fast processor and a 2.8K OLED screen. It can play games really well, and does everything else too.

Might not be quite as portable, but the screen is bigger.

I've kept up with the chinese handhelds for a while, they can be pretty decent depending on what youre on about. I have the rg353p which has a good rounded design for holding in my bigger hands. it runs a linux distro made for retro games thats quite good.

I did also get a steam deck and have been playing that the past few days, been playing Death Stranding and cod BlackOps II. I'm not as good at cod as i was as a teen.

I have a Steam Deck, was a huge handheld user for years but those no longer exist.
Switch is too big and Deck is bigger. I use the Deck a lot but mostly for long car rides where I'm not driving which are rare and from bed most nights for around an hour.
Really hoping that Valve eventually makes a Deck variation that is actually portable. If there was one the size of the Vita and kept all the functionality, not power, I'd be very happy.

Yeah I feel ya, I'l likely use my steam deck on holiday and such. mostly in bed but its definitely not one for taking out on a day trip.
i've mostly got 360/ps3 era stuff downloaded on mine atm and that has been quite nice
