Anybody else love flags or coats of arms? What is your favorite flag? What is your most hated flag? What do you think about your country's flag? Does your town or state have a symbol? I haven't been able to post much lately because I'm currently serving my time in the military. I mentioned previously that I enjoy military heraldry.

Each branch of the military has their own unique symbol, which I think is fun.

The branch that I'm currently training in is reconnaissance and guerilla warfare, and our symbol is the sprig, which is fitting considering how much time we spend in the woods.

And if I'm accepted into guerilla radio training I get to wear a slightly different badge with lightning bolts on it. Which just so cool.

The sprig is half the reason I applied for guerilla training and the thought of earning it is what keeps me going. I think it's the coolest thing ever.

Traditional heraldic animals are all male, and yes, traditionally you gotta draw the genitalia.
In fact, I remember somewhere in the 2010's in some european country someone pushed the removal of those from some army... Ah, wait, I'll search for it...

Actually was in late zeroes. Wikipedia also has a nice coverage of the events. Quote, in two words:
"Since civilian women are often sexually assaulted in the war zones of the world, the commander did not consider the depiction of a penis appropriate on a uniform worn into battle. The decision was questioned by some Swedish heraldists, with Vladimir Sagerlund asserting that coats of arms containing lions without a penis were historically given to those who had betrayed the Swedish Crown. The state heraldist Henrik Klackenberg complained that his heraldry unit should have been consulted before making such change, but did not intend to take legal action."
And, by the way, Wikipedia page still shows unaltered heraldy. I wonder if the changes were reversed at some point.
Anyway, cool thread. Shame I cannot contribute much.

I'm very biased due to my ancesty, but I have to say. Swedish Kommunvapen, are the love of my life. Whilst Serbian heraldry might be more generic and samey, I still am obsessed with it too. Those two things i've spent way too much stuff looking at. I forgot what site I used to look into this stuff, but if I ever found that charming place again, i'll share it here in a heartbeat.

Yes. Nordic heraldry in general is very pleasant. Their simple colors and shapes are very soothing, compared to Central- or Western European heraldry, which I think are often too cluttered, but I kinda get why as the localities there have much longer histories to represent. But each of the Nordic arms still has a story to tell while being very basic. I feel like the best word to describe them is "folksy". They're very down-to-earth.

And they're all part of the same heraldic tradition.

I got the twig.

After nearly 24 hours of non-stop testing, which came AFTER we'd already been on exercise in the deep forest for a week.
And I've never been more proud of myself, as I really had to to push myself to- and over my limits. And not everyone even got it, even some of my (under-)sergeants don't have it.
