Unapologetic Music Shilling Thread

Inspired by threads I've seen with people posting their art and photography, I am going to unapologetically shill my Soundcloud.

I am not that talented with playing real instruments (or writing for them either), so I make short tunes somewhat inspired by the electronic music a vidya music that I grew up with. I like the sound of old midi libraries and synthesizers, which gave vidya music from that era its own distinct sound.

First, I will post a playlist of some music I made for a fake vidya ost. The project is done, but the final masters of everything are sitting on a hard drive and I haven't figured out a good place to host the files. This was an ambitious project for me and really pushed me. Some songs work better than others. Mistakes were made, but its all just for fun.

Here are some examples of me making electronic music with a simple style. Nothing too fancy.

Are there any other musicians, composers, or producers on the sheepish patio? Post your works and put me to shame lol. I will do my best to listen and give my thoughts.

Your stuff is really good man, it nails that old school RPG vibe. I also make music inspired by old video game soundtracks! I'll post some of my better tracks + what game/genre they're inspired by. Of course, there's more stuff on my channel, and not all of it is game-inspired, should anyone be interested 😉 (this is a shill thread, after all!)

Soundcloud sucks. I only get bots and no real engagement.

As you can see, I upload my stuff to youtube since I also found soundcloud to be a bot-infested dump. I highly recommend you do the same, you can get a decent amount of engagement without having to constantly play the social media game. I challenged myself to write + upload a song every day for 100 days last year and while it was challenging, I definitely benefited from it as a songwriter and the algorithm certainly loved it. All this is a to say that if you want people to listen to your stuff on there, uploading one song of yours every day/every other day is a really good way to do it (with a different image every song). I know I'd subscribe. And obviously subscriber count shouldn't be the only reason to make music but it's really wonderful knowing that people out there are listening to and enjoying your stuff.

Hope this helps! I'm not youtube-famous by any means but I figured I'd share the info that I'd gathered over the last half a year or so.

yukarihinata don’t know if this applies to you, but does it sound like an at least feasible start if I mess around on keyboards and then write down the phrases that sound good? I remember full note, half note, and the others — but I’ve forgotten what little I knew of step correlation.

Have to agree these are quite nice. I like listening to vidya osts and midis anyway, so this fits quite well with what I already often listen to.

Lain thank you. tbh, Tfw No Vampire Gf was going to be part of another fake vidya ost project. It would have been more based on the music of Castlevania (also Bloodstained). However, that didnt pan out.

I have a whole EP that I need to upload, but I need to mix things down and have been to lazy.

Based on the picture you choose to use as art for the tracks I thought they were going to be speedcore or something. Still liked what I listened to. "An Ancient Lineage" made me think of Runescape but more modern. Not sure why it made me jump to that game in particular, but if it brings those vibes take it as a compliment cause runescape has some bangers.

I didn't really check but do you put your music on Bandcamp? That's my indie music go to place over soundcloud. Could never get myself to visit soundcloud day in day out looking for new stuff.

I made a Bandcamp, but it wants me to upload lossless files. the machine most of these tracks were produced on is out of comission, otherwise I would be able to comply.

Also the image was the hastily made album art forn my first EP. I just ended up using it as my artist name and default.

P.S. forgive my autism. thank you for the compliment. The whole Enduring Phantasm project is meant to be my attempt of making old school RPG soundtrack, specifically based on Final Fantasy and other Squaresoft RPGs. Western rpgs also play an infuence

Waiting for Louis:
Excellent vibe. Reminds me of the kind of horror games I used to play on newgrounds as a kid. Very fun little melody and bassline.

System Processing Error:
This feels like your bread and butter. Where your composition style works best. This has such a desolate atmosphere. Not too fakiliar with rain world, but it feels like you are exploring an unknown and mysterious place with potential for danger around every corner.

There was a part in the middle where the chord progression takes a darkish turn. Heightens the snese of danger and mystery. Loved it.
Yokohama AE6:
What a groove. The strings have the kind of chill feeling that I really like. The bass keeos you moving forward. Not too much else to say. I like it. Probably my second favorite of what you have posted.

The Forgotten Well:
I love how your distinct compositional style works with midi guitar. Almosts reminds me of parts of rhe Ocarina of Time soundtrack. Has the vibe that it would be a pleasant song to fall asleep to while the game console remains on in the background. Also reminds me of a lot of Dungeon Synth. Very good.

Big Band High Rollers:
Love this track. My personal favorite of what you posted. The intro captures the Jet Set Radio feel perfectly. The best part to me was the middle section with the bass and vocal sample playing together. Well done!

Let's Play:
Short and sweet. It took me a long time to understand that not every idea needs to fit the paradigm of a longer song.

Can't really say anything too negative. You nailed each of the vibes you were going for. I Iiked everything and will certainly give your other works a listen.

Red I want to, but my laptop died with all of the project files and I dont have amy lossless files anywhere... I also made lost ofnmy early songs in FL Studio before switching to LMMS (using linux so its a better option than using FL Studio with WINE)

P.S. I know these events were my fault and I accept that I have kind of screwed myself.

yukarihinata Awwe, man. Really sorry to hear that, I know all about that personally. Couple years ago I was working on an album, about 6-7 months into it the HDD just suddenly ate shit and I was just devastated, so much hard work just gone.

I just started over as I could but eventually found a relatively/comparatively cheap option for data recovery (around 600USD at that time I kid you not) and got my files back and was able to finish it as best as I could.

This is that album:
pretty happy with it, and I don't think I would've been without having taken that shot at recovering my files.

Red Sweet! Will give it a listen later. I do have a few tracks that I had project files for. Just spent some time rendering the tracks in .Wav to upload to bandcamp!

I will listen to your album and edit this post with some unsolicited feedback (I am easy to please when it comes to music, I like most genres and can appreciate even the most advant garde music).

I really like the post-rock vibes. This is the exact kind of stuff I loved to listen to on bandcamp when I was college.

They tend to be hit or miss (more miss) since I don't get much time to work on them but it's a fun project just to keep me on my toes.

Trondei I would say that you are exactly on the right track. Mess around with a keyboard and write down phrases as you can. If dictation is hard at first record the ideas with your phone and then take time dictating the idea and playing it over again. I do the same thing. I hope to one day afford a decent midi controller so I can skip that step, but then again playing it and then dictating is how it has been done for most of history.

I mentioned it above but I did a similar thing last year where I did a song every day for 100 days, and it was absolutely exhausting. I've switched to doing one every week as well and I generally prefer it. Still keeps you working/learning but not as horribly grindy as every day. Plus the extra time to refine tracks is really nice, and I get to actually put effort into the artwork.

I think forcing yourself to put stuff out consistently is a very important skill as an artist that more people should focus on, it really forces you to hone your craft.

Oh, and I really enjoy your music, especially the album you posted. Keep it up!

Woland this was pretty much how both of my albums on my bandcamp were made. Once a week I would spend 3-4 hours working on a song. My rule was not to spend more than one day working on any one song. However, for a few songs I broke that rule.

Typically, I am too busy with my normie job, so I can only really spend so much time on any one song. That is why I prioritize a ABA song structure that is very simple. Spending so little time in one song does force you to get better at your own song writing abilities.

Right now I am working on writing a book, or else I would be working on my next batch of songs. The last song I made was at the beginning of December for a friend. The rule was the same, no longer than 3-4 hours for a song.
