The Umineko Series is widely considered one of the best visual novels around, with a wide reaching influence and dedicated fandom. The games are easy to run and dripping with style. There is also an anime much derided by fans (although I enjoyed it)
It may not be the bestt first VN to go through, but its definitely one to be played!
Go! Go! Nippon! 2016 Deluxe Edition
Go! Go! Nippon! is a visual novel about taking a trip to Japan and exploring the country, with two heroines in the Misaki sisters. It is a great entry into the visual novel genre for those interested in learning about Japan.
If My Heart Had Wings
If My Heart Had Wings is a cute little Visual Novel which does not shy away from the conventions of its genre.
An interesting side note, I used to play the OP song on AudioSurf, this was because as well as being catchy, it was on my steam soundtracks library.
