Why are so many Small Web sites imageboards?

Now that I have been in the Small/Indie/Personal Web or whatever you call it for some time, I've noticed that a lot of social platforms here are imageboards for the most part which is weird because I thought that forums would be common social platforms here but no. And most of the imageboards I've seen are pretty similar.

Not to say that's a bad thing but why are imageboards so dang prevalent?

I think imageboards are the natural evolution of forums, directly textboards but also forums as a whole. It's no wonder all the major websites today are media-based, only Reddit kind of isn't but images are still allowed (sort of, I think.)
If you look at imageboards themselves, you can also see this trend unfolding. Which posts - excluding bait or otherwise controversial posts - receive the most attention in threads? As a longtime 4chan user I make the effort to always attach an image if I want for the post I'm making to receive the attention I'm looking for, even if it's something unrelated or just some screencap from an anime I like. Helps get more replies.

My running theory is that it's because the people who make them are active users of larger imageboards and want to replicate what these boards used to be.
