Is there anyone here practicing the dead art of photography ?

I would be happy to see you sharing your photos, as well as critiques on mine, and discuss what you take in photo and why. Also share photographers worth checking out. My favorites include Eliott Porter, Bill Henson, Franco Fontana... I really could not care less about what brand of camera you shoot on, I'd rather see your photos and talk about art.

Here are some of my favorite photos I took over the years.

I haven't been able yet to find a good place to talk about it on the internet. Popular places like Reddit promote boring sunset landscapes and meme color theory applications like green/orange cityscapes, everything else gets buried. Other place are usually overflown by gear talks and contain very little actual art. 4chan used to be an amazing place filled with talented artists, but after years of war gearfags won. The place is dead unless you want to discuss what amount of money you should invest in Fuji to be a good photographer. Any suggestions of good photo website very welcome.

Even if you don't shoot don't hesitate to post your thoughts about photos.

I have to confess I do like a lot of the popular photography stuff, the sunsets and whatnot. I am very easy to please in that regard, so when it comes to anything better than the usual stuff i see, which I still like, I really like all of your stuff since they are unique, well framed and I would steal them all lol.

I totally get why photography became purely gearposting, you can take a good photo with any gear these days, and to keep the group niche and elite its far easier to just require a monetary investment than force a high skill floor to compensate the ease of access. Its somewhat similar to tech threads, although luckily I think for /g/, there is an appreciation for cheapness held by a good chunk of the userbase.

I agree, its part of why I started the site though, even though we're a bit vague in terms of focus ( I think we have to be in order to grow at a rate that wouldnt make me kms), I think the focus on wanting to talk more in depth should help at least filter the content to higher quality stuff and may help inspire other sites. I am looking at subcatergories as a way to almost make the site mini forums, I dont want to make the site a monolith but I think a userbase with a mix of interests should be nice. I think we just have to make our posts enticing to others/good introductions where necessary.

I like photography, but I havent chased it as a hobby or anything, I just did some for school and Uni related to film. I'm happy to make a tag for it tho if theres interest 🙂

I enjoy photography but I don't do it very regularly and it's usually very amateurish stuff. I just like snapping things that i think have some sort of beautiful aspect to them (to me).

Your night-time pictures are very beautiful, in an eerie sort of way. And I like the toned down colors. The last one reminds me of The X-Files. I love it.
The snowy hill is also very comfy, and it contrasts well with that gray wasteland. I think there's a story to be had here. Like, you've gone sledding all day and now you have to walk back home before it gets too dark.

I've never thought of photography as a hobby of mine. And I don't know much about its technical aspects. But I do still take lots of pictures whenever I go out.

For some reason I've always felt a liking towards the 1:1 aspect ratio.

Gorgeous photos, I'm not a photographer myself (unless shitty phone pics count) so I'm afraid I can't add much to the thread aside from admiration. Though I am curious as to where some of those pictures were taken, specifically the one of the basketball hoop. I'm fairly certain I've been to that exact spot, if you took it in Croatia I'd say I definitely have. They're all absolutely lovely though, really make me want to buy a camera for when I go hiking/traveling.

I'm not really a photographer but I know your pain, it's the exact same way with guitar discussions online. I was once watching a video tutorial on a guitar technique and the guy kept rambling about how the amp he's using is identical to the one Hendrix used, and it's the same kind of guitar that Hendrix used, and the strings, and the cable... eventually he casually mentions that he bought some pills online to make his thumb longer so he could play more like Hendrix. As though what made Hendrix talented was his exact amp setup and his long thumb. You might not be able to buy talent, but that sure doesn't stop people from trying.

I like your photos very much. Although I am not an expert on photography, I appreciate that your photos to not tell the same story each time. I also like that none of them are a generic "orange pastel sunset." I particularly like the photo with the nighttime cityscape, it's very evocative. Also, the last one could a rad album cover for some obscure dungeon synth album (please don't take that as degrading your work, I mean it as the best of compliments).

Yes ! For some reasons all the good forums of the internet started to fizzle out and they are not replaced. And yeah I might be too old but no a tiktok feed is not a good place to share your art or to discover anything original. I also don't get the point of most subreddits since its just always the same stuff that ends up at the top.

Nothing wrong with that ! I just make a clear distinction between pretty pictures and attempts at art. I know it sounds snobbish. But what I mean is that to make art, you have to put a piece of you in the image. Some kind of statement that uses the photo as a media to be expressed. I'm interested by what people want to express, not the sunset. (please don't let that discourage you from posting here, that's just my opinion... see this pretty picture with 0 attempt at art by me : )

That's true and there is more to it I think. First we live in a world where motivation and focus is being monopolized by scrolling social medias, and something so little rewarding as photo requires some of that. But buying gear, gives instant reward.
Second, photo might be the hardest art form to objectively judge because it is not necessarily technical, and you don't necessarily see what technicality was put in the image. But why talk to try to dissect something completely subjective when you know that it would be instantly buried on any platform, with 0 like. Upvotes killed photography, in a way. But gear is perfect to talk about: objective in fact sheets, subjective in what is best.

Nice photos op. I quite liked the one with solitary, dead tree towering over the lush forest in the background.

Not very knowledgeable of photography, but I've always been very taken with this 1967 photograph of Sakata Eio (famous go player):

James Altucher of all people has this photo hanging in his house for some reason and wrote an article about it in Business Insider after Sakata's death in 2010. Not a good article, actually, but he did manage to capture some of the mystery of this photo:

How can you not get a little depressed looking at “The Tooth”? My face will never be etched with the pain and concentration that his face has. His face is like a Greek myth. The furrow of his brow, the deep vertical creases in the center of his forehead, the thick hair swept back to get out of the way of his brain. The clothes loosely draped over him to just protect him. That tooth. The obvious contrast with the blurry guy in the background, blurred by history, by his insignificant fate, his well-fed face, his cleanliness and tidiness that never got him anywhere. Only the sharp features of “the tooth” were meant to be carved into history.

I feel like this only scratches the surface. Everything about this photo is so striking, and most of it is accidental as well. If the timekeeper in the back hadn't gotten tired and decided to rest on his arm, if Sakata had been looking at another area of the board, if it had been a colour photo, if this photo hadn't been taken when go players still mostly played in traditional clothes, etc., the composition and the lighting wouldn't work.

It's a transcendent photograph. I have no idea who took it.

gemisthon That's so cool ! The photo might be accidental but it is no coincidence this description was given by a chess master. He really got something out of this photo because it relates to him. You cannot know anything for sure about how much work was put into this photograph, and you can argue that a lot of parameters were left to chance, and yet it expresses something deep for anyone that can see it. That is very specific to photography. Makes me think about this very famous photograph by Robert Doisneau:

A powerful photograph for sure. Take a look at it for a second, see if you like it.

The photo was actually staged. Funny how the fact that there was no chance involved feels like cheating.

I think you have something here, it's rough but I like this image as a collection of abstract shapes. This is so busy and empty at the same time. I think it takes a talented eye to get that with your "amateurish" technique.

Cool balance and scene although somewhat boring

You figurative stuff is less interesting in my opinion. The pole is very obvious, like a stock photo. The road under sunset makes me see no more than what is there.

I really like how you go for those strange aspect ratios and abstract content, that's not easy. I honestly think you're talented and should pursue photo. As a training you should probably make series, because that will make you define more precisely what it is that you want to express through those images. Like I think I see great expression in your abstract images but you need to make it consistent over many images so that it's not just another random snap. What makes you take those photos ?

Basile I've always dreamed of being a filmmaker. I've tried my hands at writing scripts a few times but I've yet to finish one. I suppose sometimes I just see things in day to day life that catch my eye and make me want to capture them, and when I do I think of them as scenes in a movie usually. Often, particularly when I'm out on a trip, I'll shoot a short video instead of taking a photo. I like doing that because eventually I compile a bunch of these to make music videos.

Red that's cool. Reminded me I saw some people using film cameras to take those kind of short videos. It really add something to those small moments.

Wow cool shots throughout, I wanted to tell you my story with my camera before I comment on individual photos here. So I had a really nice canon, I forgot the model but it was like a real, real camera. And I was such an idiot, I pawned it for $80 so that I could take a girl I liked out to dinner, basically. This was when I was new in this terrible city that I have since left. I was such a sad sack, coming off of a divorce, and into the arms of an abusive psycopath girl like that. I hate that period of my life and I will never, ever go back to that shit hole.

Anyway, the orange building with windows is nice, and so is the basketball basket on the ocean.

The contrasts between the cathedral and industrial chimneys, classical- and modern buildings, leafless trees and the grey weather of it all makes this one feel very cyberpunk-ish.

The babies are blackbirds and the eggs are robin eggs.
Mama all fluffed out on her eggs.
