Pebble Smartwatches making a comeback in future and Open Source OS

Google has open sourced the original Pebble OS after discussions with the creator.
Eric Migicovsky, said creator, has also announced that he and a small team will be working on bringing a new smartwatch out with the open sourced OS and with all the features people loved about the original

Migicovsky described the following as the important features of Pebble that nobody else has done since:

Always-on e-paper screen (it’s reflective rather than emissive. Sunlight readable. Glanceable. Not distracting to others like a bright wrist)

Long battery life (one less thing to charge. It’s annoying to need extra cables when traveling)

Simple and beautiful user experience around a core set of features I use regularly (telling time, notifications, music control, alarms, weather, calendar, sleep/step tracking)

Buttons! (to play/pause/skip music on my phone without looking at the screen)

Hackable (apparently you can’t even write your own watchfaces for Apple Watch? That is wild. There were >16k watchfaces on the Pebble appstore!)

I never owned a pebble, but god I wanted one so bad back then!

I'm so glad they're coming back and I can't wait to see what they have to offer. Will I buy one? Probably not, unless they make a smaller version that won't be as big as it used to be, and unless I'm able to use it without a smartphone.

The fact that it's super hackable is great, and I'm all for reflective displays, so it's really nice to have it back in the market. Welcome back pebble!

It looks neat but if it doesn't work out you can literally make the same thing with an ESP32 (if you don't want to connect it to your phone).
