I used to use pretty much the whole pack (instagram, twitter, reddit, discord, 4chan... even tiktok before quarantine). In the last few years I've realized how bad they are for me and my attention, so I just started slowly getting myself off of those platforms.
I slowly got rid of twitter, then 4chan, then reddit, and finally, almost a month ago, after having it strictly time limited on my phone, I uninstalled instagram. I'm not gonna lie, I sometimes miss instagram just because many friends are on there, and they used to send me a bunch of good reels, but my best friend quit a week before me, so that was a great help. I'm still on discord and will explain the situation later in this post.
Even though I just got rid of instagram, it's been months (about half a year) since I quit the rest, and my god, MY GOD the difference is night and day.
Twitter, especially, was a pain in the ass but I thought it was worth my time to find interesting stuff on there (tech news, fonts, graphic design...). It's not as attention-grabbing as reels/short-form video content, so I thought it's not that bad...? WRONG! Ho-ly! Getting rid of all the ragebait, all the "le AI/crypto/X good/bad" absurd debates, the musk ----riders... I feel so damn free! And I've realized that I'm "missing out" on so many news that I've honestly never cared about!
4chan is an obvious bad influence, though talking on /g/ has given me a couple of blessings when it comes to knowing some good brands/product lines/distros. It was nice to get rid of that site too.
Reddit, well... I've blocked the site on my computer, but I sometimes have to unblock it to follow some guides, read some discussions about a product I was thinking of buying, etc. A huge timewaster if you scroll through the feed, but let's be real, the site can be quite useful for some searches on the internet, especially now that all these AI slop websites are taking over the SEO on almost every search engine.
And about Discord, well... I don't hang out in big/public servers, never did. I do hang out in some smaller servers, especially one of them, and I'm intending to leave before summer. Sure, I know the people on there, we joke around, we chat, we have fun, but to be honest, the topic of the server doesn't interest me at all anymore, and because Discord is Discord, the server's average state of mind is... kinda unhealthy. I'm not going to elaborate too much, but let's just say that I get some not-so-sane DMs from time to time, with no warnings. I cannot simply leave discord because all my IRL friends are on there too, but I guess it's time for me to just leave those unhealthy circles.
My process of getting rid of everything took (is taking) a long while, between restricting my screentime, leaving the platforms, and starting to focus more in my life... It's taken a year and a half so far! It's a long journey, but I'm so happy with my progress and my current point in life.
