I know a lot of sheeps here love video games, but do any of you love and play board games ? How often, with whom? What is your experience with board games in your life? What are your favorite board games?

For this thread, I'll leave aside discussions about TCG and wargames, which I believe deserve their own threads. This is about any games played on a table, whether it's traditional (Chess, Tarot, Go), classic (Monopoly, Scrabble), party (Dixit, Time's Up), Coop (Hanabi, Pandemic), Expert (Root, Catan)... or anything that you think is relevant and does not need its own thread.

From a young age I often went to the toy library to borrow games and play with the kids in the neighborhood. Unfortunately I had few friends so couldn't play as much as I wanted, and I quickly realized my parents aren't as interested in games as me. It was easier to play video games when no one else wants to play.
During High School I had a circle of friends with whom we would often play classic cards (Black Lady, Slap) between lessons. I also brought Munchkin when we had more time. At the time I loved Muchkin. I played Munchkin all the time. I changed my mind about Munchkin later.
Only during higher education did I have occasions to play more expert games and explore modern board games. I left luck-based Munchkin for games with more meat to it, such as 7 Wonders, Cosmic Encounters, Khronos... My school's board game club had a pretty big collection of games so I got to try many good and bad games with my fellow students.

Nowadays I have a good library of games in my flat, but not as many occasions to play as I like. I play online fairly often, rarely on TTS (I don't know many motivated friends with TTS) but usually on Board Game Arena, mostly for games under 30 minutes. BGA has its pros and cons, but for games that don't have too many interactions it's good.

My preferred games are strategy or negotiation games, with a lot of interaction between players, Root, Cosmic Encounter and Oceans are among my favorites.

Grew up with this one and it became a favorite in my friend group. You found, grow and merge companies that anyone can buy stock in. Relatively simple and has a pretty cool board/pieces.

My preferred board games are the ones that do not let other players sit idle as they wait their turn. I agree that playing on the phone during a session is rude, but at the same time you need to also blame the game design when for the majority of the time, players are twiddling their thumbs.

Therefore I enjoy games where everyone moves at the same time, the game is co-op, or when a player makes a move, all other players also get a chance to make a move. Some of my favorites are:

Robo Rally: A battlebot game where everyone moves at the same time. It actually requires some skill as you need to program your robot in a limited amount of time. Programmers may enjoy this game.

Space Base: A dice throwing game. When it's another player's turn, they may throw a number that benefits you.

Pandemic: A fun coop game that requires all players to plan and strategize.

Wingspan: You play with birds. Some birds allow you to make a move depending on the other players' actions.

I've never played Robo Rally but I want to try one day (I'm a programmer too), to learn about the actual game Richard Garfield wanted to make while he was working on small card game project as an afterthought on the side called Magic™.

I play Space Base from time to time on BGA, it's fun but you can easily get frustrated if the dice rolls you were aiming for aren't coming up.
If you like it, did you hear about Bad Company? The main concept is exactly the same with buying card that will activate on certain dice rolls during other player's turns, but with a crime & racing theme instead of SF. I've only played once but it was pretty fun too.

As for Wingspan, it's a good game but I feel it's slightly too long for what it is. It's a very good entrypoint for new players to experience expert games though, and obviously if you like the bird theme it's golden.

I don't know if this one is considered a "board" game, but its a pretty on edge game played by 2 or more people. might as well add it to this thread of other games.

I spent about 2 hours playing the PS1 version of Monopoly (singleplayer) today. I know it's a game kind of infamous for its poor design, and while I'd not touched it in probably upwards of 10 years, I can only agree, it's kinda lame to have an endgame that basically will involve two players having a close to equal level of board control, and a bad roll doesn't end the game but just forces you to sell all your assets and drags out a stalemate for any unspecified amount of time.
