I was thinking about this for a while, because it does feel like the modern operatic singing practice has been detrimental to the music and art as a whole. And I want to know from people that do not often listen to Opera but might enjoy other classical pieces to a certain extend.
Personally, I quite love Bach's Cantatas and Oratorios and am quite lucky for them to have very varied recordings covering multiple different singing styles. If you compare these two recordings, one in a singing style that prioritizes very clean and smooth tones and the other in the usual vibrato-heavy opera singing style. Does the former make any difference in your enjoyment of the piece, and would you enjoy an opera entirely sung like that, or is it more the compositional style itself that puts you off?
