friffri Internet people are (to an extent) shaping irl culture, because nowadays meatspace and cyberworld are so intertwined. We can no longer easily separate both of them (or you could, depending on how far you are willing to go). Also, a bit of a personal nitpick, those type of people described in the article are insufferable. But luckily, they are a small minority in the big picture.

You're right, when I read "internet culture" I immediately think of that sphere around 4chan/early reddit but there are many more subcultures I barely know of and probably even more that I don't even know.
I wonder if there are some ideas I know that have originated in those internet subcultures I don't know of...

Your parents ever ask you to explain a meme to them? It has happened multiple times to me in the last years. I always feel weird when I hear people talk about internet stuff IRL, I remember when it was kind of a rule not to talk about it, but that doesn't hold anymore I guess.

But yeah, I agree that the bigger sites are filled with meaningless negativity. Probably a mix of:

So many people are online nowadays that they become usernames to our eyes. It's hard to recognize users when thousand of people post every second
Too many people spend so much time online nowadays that they have nothing good or interesting to say, leaving only boring meta-commentary and cheap "dunks" left for them to post

Not sure if this is the right thread to admit this but i've been spamming daily PCSX2 hate threads on 4chan for about 3 years at this point. It's a very light case of spam as i only post it once per day, but i use the same image for the OP every time. I'm also the one who came up with that TF2 is dead pasta you might see spammed in a majority of TF2 threads. In both cases, i don't even have anything against TF2 or PCSX2, i just do it for the lulz. I've also occasionally may or may not have spammed cunny in off topic race bait threads. If you happened to see someone reciting Bury the Light with cunny attached, then that's probably me

I feel like AI is killing a lot of my high effort posting on chans. With AI, I can talk forever about my autism fixation interests and get guaranteed paragraph sized (you)s. Where as on alt-chans sometimes you write up a really long post and don't get any responses. 😔

I think its gotten naturally a quite a bit worse, but as its hit some users thresholds for 'not worth it' in a sense, things like MeathShot and his spam, as well as what Rez is considering , further accelerating things.
I think the only arguments will be at what point that has happened. I do get it, it can be fun in a 'fuck you, chaos time' kind of way. Although as someone born to hold the broom... I cant say it fills me with joy that people do it😆.
Image boards are typically the best (if that applies) places to more uhhh, directly shitpost since they archive/delete more often.
(this isnt me putting you both on blast btw, mandatory wagging my finger aside lol)

Did not want to write a new thread, so I will ask it in here. Where do you think all the /comfy/ stuff from the net has gone? Nowadays, it seems like every site/social media/etc is almost always filled with some sort of negativity. I remember a few years back it was not as bad, even on chans/boards you could at least see a few positive threads. What has happened? Does it have to do with the way the world is heading? (Or now that I think about it, it might just be a case of frequency bias as well....)

Well we have this website for starters so it's clear that /comfy/ is not dead at all, but it's just become more niche in a sense. Negativity is what always gets all the clicks, while more positive material tends to be ignored. There are still a good amount of chans out there that have a pretty comfy feel to them, you just got to do a bit of digging for them.

What are you talking about? There are places where people talk about RPGs and classic video games, and history and poetry...and writing new short stories and so on... And these places are the same as they were before, maybe even better.

Ignore Facebook and Twitter, they are designed to make people fight. Fighting is engagement, engagement is more time seeing more ads. TikTok is likely designed in a similar way.

Honestly, a know that local news covering murders all the time makes people think murders are up when they are down, but I personally hate when they try to balance it out with Kittens and puppies or whatever.

It's all pointless on a statistical level, I'm down to watching TLDR and checking Ground News at this point.

There was a flash game person on IO who made a game I believe about trust and betrayal and the Prisoners dilemma and the internet.

What it came down too, was that people don't know each other and from past experiences very much don't trust each other. I can think of dozens of conversations, where like two people were agreeing with each other, but one of them read it as disagreement for like an hour and raged at the other person.

Also, Twitter was really good at finding out specifically what makes you angry and showing you that. The fact you can't downvote stuff, almost forces you to feel like they got the last word in, if you don't reply.

Go with what your heart desires, and not whatever is trending at the moment. There's someone who's been spamming floigan memes for a few years at this point. Not the most relevant shitposter, but he sure is quite memorable in the eyes of the few who have seen him (like me). If you really want to join the high ranking autists, then go beyond and set up a bot so you can shit up the catalog 24/7. How do you make one? I have no idea, that's entirely up to you to figure out.

Adding to the point about the internet influencing reality, I would say that at this point the two have essentially merged. Serial Experiments Lain was really prophetic in this regard. I'd recommend this video on the topic. The TL;DR of it is that smartphones are what really pushed us over the edge into this merger of the online and reality.

That was exactly what I thought when I first saw the anime. It was so weirdly disassociating noticing the things/themes that were in the anime happen right under my nose in the meatspace. I wonder if we will ever go back to the time where both cyberspace and meatspace are two separate entities. Probably never, but one can hope.

Something we're seeing more of lately is the obfuscation of site API's, usually behind paywalls

Currently, reddit is having issues as it wants to put its behind one next month, following on from twitter doing so earlier this year. (which is why we dont have a twitter signup option)
BOY AM I GLAD I STOPPED WORKING ON TWITTER AND REDDIT ONES

Due to the API change, many different front-ends for reddit would be unable to be used and anything that relies on it to gather data would also struggle.
This has resulted in subreddits moderation closing their subreddits in protest.

(note this is just the gist I have of the situation, I dont really use reddit much at all)

We already know that the scope of the web has shifted massively over the past 20 years, do we think that it will expand again as these monopolies try to grab more money and power, or do you think that people will just become accustomed, and such protests will end and be forgotten?

Lumeinshin The reddit protest is already approaching its end as more subs started to open up. It would just be another cycle of rage quitting, signing up for alternative sites, abandoning them, calming down, and going back just like how mastodon is flooded with dead accounts made by twitter refugees. Those protests are meaningful symbolically and can impose harm to a certain extent upon the companies, but definitely not powerful enough against those established monopolies imo.
