I have been thinking about planting something substantial for a while, but probably not this year. Not only are gardening boxes too pricey for my current budget, but I also need to think about how to deal with spanish slugs. These monsters are an invasive species where I live and they are very numerous, kill everything, and are also just disgusting to look at. They will definitely go after something like cabbage very hard. I might plant some basil, though.
I take care of my mother's herb garden for her every summer, though. Last year was pretty ambitious with 20 pots of chili and jalapenos, all of which were killed by larvae unfortunately. My mother said to spray them with soapy water, but I think you need something more substantial.
